Deerland opened for a soft launch last Saturday. It’s a new kids play zone located on Finlayson Road in the former Bed Bath & Beyond space at 775 Finlayson St. It’s a draw for toddlers and teens alike, with a trampoline park, arcade, climbing wall, as well as a mini town where kids can role play as firefighters, police officers, even reporters. The grand opening is set for June 30th, and during a tour of Deerland, Mayfair owner Ruby Liu confirms a major redevelopment of the former Hudson’s Bay location at Mayfair Shopping Centre. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The topic can be found here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/topic/7985-deerland/?view=getnewpost You can unsubscribe at any time here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/unsubscribe/Zm9ydW1zO2ZvcnVtczsxMzszNjI5OzM2Mjk7bGF1cmVuY2UucG91dGluZS52dnZ2QGJsb2dnZXIuY29t/ If you are not following any forums and wish to stop receiving notifications, uncheck the setting "Send me news and information" found in 'My Settings' under 'Notification Options'.

What Highlands council is currently debating, however, is much bigger. A proposed zoning bylaw amendment would impose a maximum dwelling size of 7,500 square feet across the municipality, regardless of lot size or family circumstances. Currently, there are only five hyperscale data centres in the country, with two in B.C. and the others in Ontario, Quebec, and New Brunswick. ___________________ In fact, about 41 per cent of active data centres are in Ontario, while only about ten per cent are in Alberta, according to Rolheiser’s latest research, which was based on proprietary data and still needs to be peer reviewed, a process where it is examined by independent experts. However, those figures change “dramatically,” said Rolheiser, when looking into the future. Alberta is callingIf all of the proposed or under construction projects are completed, then Alberta would be home to 90 per cent of the country’s data centres. Not every proposed project will be built, but the figures show the wave of interest in Alberta because of its deregulated electricity system, cheap natural gas-powered electricity, and a provincial government that’s actively trying to grow the sector by fast-tracking regulatory approvals and offering an AI data centre "concierge team" to welcome investors and operators. In the past, data centre developers favoured provinces offering low-emission electricity, but as Quebec, B.C. and Ontario have introduced legislation constraining grid access, the higher priority now is finding any type of available power. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The topic can be found here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/topic/7981-data-centrescenters/?view=getnewpost You can unsubscribe at any time here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/unsubscribe/Zm9ydW1zO2ZvcnVtczsyMzszNjI5OzM2Mjk7bGF1cmVuY2UucG91dGluZS52dnZ2QGJsb2dnZXIuY29t/ If you are not following any forums and wish to stop receiving notifications, uncheck the setting "Send me news and information" found in 'My Settings' under 'Notification Options'.

lpoutine, Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Gad Saad" in forum "Online Media". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Elon Musk has once again pushed a book into the centre of online conversation. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO recently recommended Gad Saad’s new book, 'Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind' on X, calling it essential reading and urging people to share it widely. Musk wrote, “Read this book and give it to all your friends. Survival of civilization depends on it!”His post came in response to Saad sharing that the book had reached the number two spot among new releases in Canada. Musk’s endorsement quickly drew attention because the book deals with a subject that has become increasingly charged in political and cultural debate: whether empathy, when detached from reason and long-term consequence, can become self-destructive. https://www.timesnownews.com/lifestyle/books/elon-musk-recommends-one-book-and-says-the-future-of-civilisation-may-depend-on-it-article-154324303 (https://www.timesnownews.com/lifestyle/books/elon-musk-recommends-one-book-and-says-the-future-of-civilisation-may-depend-on-it-article-154324303) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The topic can be found here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/topic/7972-gad-saad/?view=getnewpost You can unsubscribe at any time here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/unsubscribe/Zm9ydW1zO2ZvcnVtczs0MzszNjI5OzM2Mjk7bGF1cmVuY2UucG91dGluZS52dnZ2QGJsb2dnZXIuY29t/ If you are not following any forums and wish to stop receiving notifications, uncheck the setting "Send me news and information" found in 'My Settings' under 'Notification Options'.

lpoutine, Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Central Saanich’s 75th anniversary celebration" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The District of Central Saanich is preparing to mark its 75th anniversary with a full day of festivities this summer, highlighted by a lineup of musicians with deep roots in the community. The July 25 celebration at Centennial Park will feature performers who were all raised in Central Saanich, organizers say, making the event both a milestone celebration and a showcase of local talent. Headlining the festivities is Nick La Riviere & The Best Laid Plans, known for blending New Orleans-inspired party music with funk, R&B and pop influences. Frontman Nick La Riviere, a graduate of Stelly’s Secondary School, credits the school’s music program as an early inspiration. La Riviere also serves as musical director for the Victoria Rock Choir, a 130-member vocal ensemble that will also perform during the anniversary event. Other featured acts include Vanilla Riot, a cover band made up of current and former Central Saanich residents, and Madi and the Dads, fronted by Tsartlip First Nation singer Madison Olsen. https://cheknews.ca/homegrown-talent-takes-centre-stage-for-central-saanichs-75th-anniversary-celebration-1323931/ (https://cheknews.ca/homegrown-talent-takes-centre-stage-for-central-saanichs-75th-anniversary-celebration-1323931/) The anniversary celebration runs from noon to 8 p.m. and will also include a food truck festival, beer garden, classic car display and family activities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The topic can be found here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/topic/7971-central-saanich’s-75th-anniversary-celebration/?view=getnewpost You can unsubscribe at any time here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/unsubscribe/Zm9ydW1zO2ZvcnVtczsxMzszNjI5OzM2Mjk7bGF1cmVuY2UucG91dGluZS52dnZ2QGJsb2dnZXIuY29t/ If you are not following any forums and wish to stop receiving notifications, uncheck the setting "Send me news and information" found in 'My Settings' under 'Notification Options'.

Citified.ca posted topic CORUS - downtown Victoria building owner's task force

lpoutine, Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "CORUS - downtown Victoria building owner's task force" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The lack of action on the many social issues impacting downtown Victoria has led to the formation of CORUS, a group of downtown Victoria building owners (not business owners, but property owners) that have established a task force to elevate the issues and concerns the industry has, and help restore public safety, a healthier business climate downtown and empower decision making with real-world data. CORUS is operated under the Chamber of Commerce umbrella in order to alleviate the challenges with creating a standalone organization, but is a separate entity. Membership information is in the article below. Upper Yates Street in downtown Victoria's Harris Green neighbourhood is undergoing significant change, with approximately 1,000 units of purpose-built rental homes currently under construction on opposite sides of the thoroughfare at Cook Street, as seen in this May, 2026 photo. A new task force called CORUS, made up of downtown building owners, is hoping to elevate the voice of the property ownership community to shed light on how government decisions impact property operations, and commercial tenants increasingly struggling to sustain their businesses in the city centre. Victoria Watcher posted topic ChatBots

lpoutine, Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "ChatBots" in forum "Online Media". ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Young Canadians want AI companies to make their chatbots less addictive: report A new report focusing on the perspectives of young people says the government should order AI companies to take steps to curb the addictive aspects of their AI chatbots. It’s one of a series of recommendations made by youth between the ages of 17 and 23 who took part in roundtables across the country. Participants presented the report — published by McGill University’s Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy and Simon Fraser University's Dialogue on Technology Project — and its recommendations on Parliament Hill on Thursday. Maddie Case, a youth fellow with the McGill centre, introduced the 25 young people who developed the chatbot recommendations. She said they talked about "the apps they used at two in the morning when they couldn't sleep. About the friendly ears they found between AI systems when human ones felt so far away. About the moment they realized that they'd started turning to AI for things they'd never needed help with before." Case said the youth also discussed what it felt like to "use a tool that has been built deliberately to keep you coming back, not necessarily because it's good for you, but because your attention is worth money." They also talked about encountering problematic content and how they had nowhere to turn if something went wrong in their engagements with chatbots, Case said. https://www.timescolonist.com/national-news/young-canadians-want-ai-companies-to-make-their-chatbots-less-addictive-report-12213767#google_vignette (https://www.timescolonist.com/national-news/young-canadians-want-ai-companies-to-make-their-chatbots-less-addictive-report-12213767#google_vignette) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The topic can be found here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/topic/7963-chatbots/?view=getnewpost You can unsubscribe at any time here: https://vibrantvictoria.ca/forum/index.php?/unsubscribe/Zm9ydW1zO2ZvcnVtczs0MzszNjI5OzM2Mjk7bGF1cmVuY2UucG91dGluZS52dnZ2QGJsb2dnZXIuY29t/ If you are not following any forums and wish to stop receiving notifications, uncheck the setting "Send me news and information" found in 'My Settings' under 'Notification Options'.

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "The Jeremy Boreing Show" in forum "Online Media".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeremy Boreing, who co-founded The Daily Wire (https://barrettmedia.com/?s=Daily+Wire) and served as its CEO until exiting last year, has announced plans to launch his own podcast.
The Jeremy Boreing Show will launch on Tuesday, March 24th. The program will be made available on all major podcast platforms, as well as on YouTube and Rumble.
In a statement announcing his new podcast, Boreing shared insight into what he hopes the program will deliver, and why now marks the right time — with conservative infighting being at the forefront of his monologue — to launch the show.
"It's the so-called podcast wars, and it's pitting many people — many people I know personally — against one another and turning former friends and allies into seemingly irreconcilable enemies," said Boreing. "The political coalition that ascended Donald Trump to the presidency twice in a decade has been shattered, and the future of the GOP and the MAGA movement seems up for grabs."
According to promotional materials for the show, Jeremy Boreing's project will "sit down with the artists and visionaries, the newsmakers and the troublemakers who are shaping what comes next. Together, we're going to explore the stories the blackpillers and doomscrollers don't want you to know."

There was a time not too long ago when BuzzFeed was the hottest name in publishing. Then everything crashed. In January 2026, BuzzFeed (https://brobible.com/tag/buzzfeed/) saw 33.21 million visits according to SemRush. This week, BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti announced the quarterly earnings and those following closely believe this signaled the end is near. Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Victoria Folk Music Festival" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Victoria Folk Music Festival, one of the surprise successes from last year's crop of summer music festivals, has unveiled the lineup for its second edition, with Chantal Kreviazuk, the Sadies and Valdy among the headliners.

The Deep Dark Woods, Barney Bentall, Shari Ulrich, Daniel Wesley, and the Unfaithful Servants are also among the acts scheduled to appear at the one-day event, which returns to Royal Athletic Park on July 4, 2026. Two stages of entertainment, a vintage market, and a kids zone are among the offerings. The inaugural edition of the Victoria Folk Music Festival was a big hit in 2025 and reached capacity a full week before the event. Organizers are expecting a similar response this summer and are encouraging patrons to purchase tickets well in advance.

Restrict builders, watch prices go higher

Ya gotta love the NDP. They are finally showing some fiscal discipline.

Tucked away in the new provincial budget — the one with the $13 billion deficit — is a provision to remove the provincial sales tax exemption for wool.

They are finally going after those greedy grannies darning socks or knitting mittens for their grandchildren.

Meanwhile, in the same budget, they have paused construction on new long-term care bed facilities around the province. Well, that is actually a good thing, despite the backlog and growing need.

A spokesman for the office of the B.C. seniors advocate was on the radio, telling us that the projected cost for some of these facilities was approaching $2 million per bed. That is not a typo.

That's the projected cost for essentially a modest room with a bathroom. No one has to be a construction expert to know that is a ridiculous figure.

I guess that's what happens when you restrict the building of public infrastructure projects to the 15 per cent of the provincial construction workforce that is unionized.

We desperately need a new government in this province that actually has private sector management experience.

Celebrate Seedy SaturdayVictoria Seedy Saturday is back next weekend in what is touted as the kickoff to the gardening season.

This year's event will be on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Crystal Garden at 713 Douglas St.

The annual event, one of about 150 such gatherings across the country, dates back to 1994 and brings together gardeners, farmers and environmental groups.

"It serves as a hub for seed exchanging, a marketplace for locally grown and climate-adapted seeds and plants, and a space for both formal and informal learning about gardening, climate-resilient food growing and ecological stewardship," organizers said.

It will feature about 70 vendors, including the Capital Region Beekeepers Association, Edible Landscapes Design Ltd., the Compost Education Centre and the Garry Oak Meadow Preservation Society.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Storeys (online real estate / development publication)

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Storeys (online real estate / development publication)" in forum "Online Media".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
TORONTO and VANCOUVER, BC, Jan. 20, 2026 /CNW/ - SiteMedia, Canada's leading platform for industrial and construction intelligence, today announced the acquisition of STOREYS (storeys.com), the country's premier digital destination for real estate news and urban development.
The acquisition marks a strategic shift in how the industry accesses information. By integrating STOREYS, SiteMedia now connects the entire lifecycle of a project--from initial infrastructure and industrial development to the final real estate transactions that define Canadian communities.

Last week, Abbotsford-based SiteMedia Group announced (https://www.newswire.ca/news-releases/sitemedia-acquires-storeys-to-unify-canada-s-built-community-826695561.html) their acquisition of Storeys, which paused operations after September. Storeys was founded a decade ago in Toronto, I joined in August 2022 as their first (and only) staff member outside of Ontario, so I take a lot of pride in knowing I helped grow Storeys' presence in Western Canada to the point that the company was acquired by a BC-based company.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Steps to building our economy

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Steps to building our economy" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In the past I have said there are some things we could do to step up our economy, and tourism is a good place where we have an advantage, if somewhat seasonal in most of the country.

A few ideas:

1. Make travle to this country EASY by making sure we staff border and entry-points well
2. Improve airport where necessary
3. ADD international arrival points
4. IMPROVE our public realm everywhere, but subsidizing storefront and signage improvements and replacements
5. Plant more trees in public areas
6. Open more public or private campgrounds
7. REMOVE all grafitti the day it occurs
8. Build more parks and promote better the ones we have, from small municipla parks to huge provincial and national parks.
9. Have more festivals or destination events - why do artists do Vegas or New York "residencies" when we could have them in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
10. PROMOTE and improve BC Ferries, to make them a better experience on all roues - add a second class?
11. Make our cities SAFER, even if we probably already have a rpetty good reputation for that.

These are some general ideas than can be applied across the country.

I will also add what we coud do locally.

Citified.ca posted topic Sooke real-estate data and discussion

lpoutine,

Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "Sooke real-estate data and discussion" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The Welcome to Sooke sign stands west of the Sooke River Bridge, at the entrance to Sooke's town centre on Highway 14 at Phillips Road. Sooke's real-estate market had a strong year in 2025, outpacing sales and prices of 2024. The Victoria suburb remained a much more affordable community in terms of housing cost, compared to southern Vancouver Island's regional figures.

Sooke's 2025 real-estate market saw sales and price gains, with houses priced 25% below Victoria's regional avg.

Winter festival to light up downtown Victoria on Family Day weekendInteractive displays, live performances and storytelling are on the menu for the evening event, called Victoria at Dusk. An interactive art event will light up downtown Victoria over the Family Day weekend, offering a chance to be immersed in creative displays, live performances and storytelling.
Victoria at Dusk will feature "hubs" that each focus on a different theme: nature, immersion, community, transformation and curiosity.
Ship Point will be the main hub, dedicated to DJs, local brews and food trucks.
Other hubs will be at the Royal B.C. Museum, Victoria Conference Centre, Government Street and Bastion Square.
Visitors will walk along a route between each hub, or roam from place to place, taking in colourful lights and music.

[...]

The event is funded by the city's OUR DWTN initiative and was created in partnership with The Wilder, a B.C.-based creative studio and event planner.
Melanie Lazelle, founder and creative director of The Wilder, said she applied to produce the event after seeing a request for proposals from the city.
The Wilder was awarded $225,000 to produce the event, according to the city's project proposal website.

Victoria Watcher posted topic The Future of History - floating Indigenous welcome centre and exhibit

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "The Future of History - floating Indigenous welcome centre and exhibit" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Future of History is envisioned as a floating concrete structure on the provincial water lot that was once home to Undersea Gardens and is currently the site of a temporary dock for the FRS Clipper passenger ferry during construction of the Belleville Street terminal.

The floating Indigenous welcome centre and exhibit would be approximately 15,000 square feet, featuring teaching spaces, canoe workshop areas, mooring for canoes, and spiritual and community gathering areas.

It would tell the history of the Lekwungen people who once lived in villages around the harbour and illustrate how Indigenous people used waterways for thousands of years before European contact.

"This opportunity returns the Lekwungen Nations to a place of prominence here in our traditional territory where residents and visitors will be welcomed," said Chief Jerome Thomas of the Esquimalt First Nation.

The project would go hand in hand with the Maritime Museum's move into a 21,000 square feet space in the CPR Steamship Terminal building.

The plan is for the Maritime Museum to contribute $1 million to the new floating museum and raise a third of the $38 million needed to build it from corporate sponsors, a third through a local fundraising campaign and a third from the federal government. The provincial contribution would be the land and water lot.

"This really is the opportunity to add a community component to what is otherwise a transportation terminal. We really want to be able to roll this out for the first season after the completion of the Belleville terminal," he said.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Hobbs Creek and Mystic Pond(s) - Cadboro Bay

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Hobbs Creek and Mystic Pond(s) - Cadboro Bay" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------

The University of Victoria owns the property known as Mystic Vale but as Hobbs Creek winds its way down the hillside, it has been channeled into a number of man-made ponds on private property. You can see one of these ponds on the south east corner of Cadboro Bay Rd and Killarney Rd. In the winter it is full of ducks, usually including the beautiful Wood Ducks. If you go down the short Mystic Lane, the upper side of that street contains a large pond but the ducks don't care for this pond. It is probably too exposed to predators.
The largest pond is at the bottom near the ocean on Waring Place and that is the pond generally known as Mystic Pond. It is surrounded by houses whose owners actually own part of the pond as part of their lot. They can now be bought and sold as individual parcels and a few years back, one parcel was up for sale on the MLS system, separate from the house that it was originally attached to. That house didn't sell but perhaps Saanich bought up that parcel as it has been doing with several of the other parcels over time. Saanich probably owns about half of the parcels now.
In about 2005 or so, there was a restoration project on Mystic Pond. They cleared out some vegetation and trees and it was suppose to be a great improvement but there is some discussion as to whether it made any difference to the pond. Fortunately the cover has filled in again and the ducks once more feel safe hiding in the understory. A recent change since about 1990 is the increase in the number of Great Blue Heron nests surrounding the pond in the high cottonwoods. Each year has shown an increase in the number of nests. It is quite noisy when the Herons come back to do their nesting each year. Winter is a good time to see where the nests are situated when the leaves are off the trees.
In winter, there are a number of ducks who enjoy the pond. As well as the Wood Ducks, there are commonly Mallard and American Wigeon. You may also see Hooded Merganser, Bufflehead, Green-winged Teal, American Coot, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler and, occasionally, a Eurasian Wigeon. Canada Geese often use the pond as a safe place to spend the night. Glaucous-winged Gulls are very common and Mew Gulls are also seen on the pond. Stickleback are also in the pond but it's the mucky vegetative matter that most of the ducks enjoy. Red-winged Blackbirds are in good numbers around the pond. The Belted Kingfisher makes its presence known and the bushes are filled with many other small woodland birds throughout the year. The water helps to attract the birds. Members of Victoria Natural History Society visit this spot to enjoy the numerous birds here.
The residents are concerned that the silt and other debris from upstream is gradually filling in the ponds so they are getting very shallow. The owners and other concerned people are worried about what will happen in future if nothing is done upstream. The entire area around Hobbs Creek in Mystic Vale is devoid of vegetation due to the heavy traffic, especially trodden down by off-lease dogs. Not a blade of grass is able to grow around the water course in Mystic Vale. The heavy rains cause serious runoffs coming down the hillsides around the creek and add significant silt into Hobbs Creek. There will need to be cooperation between UVic, Saanich and Oak Bay if this magical pond is to be able to continue as a viable water way.
