This creative workshop series for youth ages 10+ is located at the Goward House Community Centre with a Saturday afternoon finale exhibition showcasing the wearable art created by the youth cohort at Xchanges Art Gallery in downtown Victoria BC. Learn how to thread and operate a sewing machine, bring your own or use the ones provided. Choose from the provided fabrics, vintage clothing and unconventional materials or bring your own to alter, upcycle and form into a work of wearable art. Design your creation with one-on-one guidance on how to realize your vision. Together we will move through the alternative dyestuffs methods of cyanotype sun-printing to collaboratively create a banner for the classroom and eco printing with flowers onto a canvas tote bag that you will cut, press, pin and sew together yourself. Choose an artist name for yourself, a title for your project and explore how to conceptualize and write an artist statement. LESSONS cyanotype sun-printing Machine threading and operation create a simple tote bag for beginners or a crescent moon bag with zipper for confident sewists, to develop your machine sewing skills, store your project in and keep afterwards eco-printing with flowers Create a custom body form to your own measurements to develop your project with and keep afterwards effective seam ripping, deconstruction and reconstruction of garments Learning or improving skills on how to thread a needle and a few different hand stitches Custom appliqués and patches ironing, pinning and clamping Hemming the edge of a garment How to make informed decisions on fabric, materials and equipment choices writing an artist statement developing your very own wearable art garment from concept to realization with guidance from the instructor A finale art exhibition will take place on Saturday the 18th at the Xchanges Art Gallery for the cohort to show off and talk about their creations. Walking or displaying their final works of wearable art with artist statements on vision, direction and materials choices on display for the cohort and their guests to experience. The classroom at Goward House is located on the ground floor of the facility and is accessible by ramp with large double doors for entry. Xchanges gallery is up a flight of stairs and has a narrow balcony entrance. A limited number of reduced rate tickets are available to BIPOC, Queer and Trans youth and can be accessed by contacting the facilitator Sara Gold directly at sara@saragold.ca Workshop facilitator and multidisciplinary artist Sara Gold is a lifelong sewist and designer with an established textile art practice focused on couture created with repurposed antique garments, fabrics and objects. transforming these 100+ year old materials into modern wearable designs. Their 30+ years of experience with hand stitching and machine sewing compliments their natural dyestuffs, pattern drafting and basic engineering skills. Through their clothing, art and music label the House of Gold, sara creates custom patterns and natural fibre garments for clients of all sizes, shapes, ages and backgrounds including for stage and theater.
