Comment: 50 Government and the erosion of public trustWhile the need for rental housing is widely acknowledged, the project should not be described as a "model" developmenthttps://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comment-50-government-and-the-erosion-of-public-trust-11653730 (https://www.timescolonist.com/opinion/comment-50-government-and-the-erosion-of-public-trust-11653730) The application referenced is for a six-storey building with 17 suites and only two parking spaces. It has gone through eight design iterations.
Each one has used hours of city staff time and been conclusively rejected for failing to comply with key elements of city policy.
These include height and setback limits, massing and transitions to neighbouring homes. Far from refining the project, successive revisions have increased its negative impacts on neighbouring properties.

Victoria Watcher posted topic OK, Dope Comedy Club - Cook Street (North Park)
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "OK, Dope Comedy Club - Cook Street (North Park)" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While the OK, Dope owners have seen their comedy venues come and go, they are confident in their ability to successfully fill the room with laughter, as they've already had the practice of hustling for crowds.
"We're so lucky that we're able to have a testing ground at the Mint and add shows as the need became greater," said Foreman.
"Nash had the idea that rain or shine, we would be a place people could go on Friday and we never stopped. It's almost a reverse thing – we have the people – we just needed the infrastructure."
If a show doesn't bring in the numbers needed, then they lose money and it's up to them to figure out what to do differently. This is 'high-stakes environment' has led to their success, they say.
"With us, we want it to be the best show it possibly can be," said Park.
The two are funding the joint venture themselves, intentionally not relying on grants.

Esquimalt's long-awaited review of its official community plan (OCP) is finally on the table after two decades without a major update. A staff report recommended that council launch a full OCP review, depending on funding approval in the 2026 budget. During the Dec. 8 committee of the whole, the motion was passed with Coun. Duncan Cavens opposed. The move follows council's 2023-2026 priority to prepare a project scope in early 2026 and an October 2024 directive requesting an impact assessment.

'It's going to be devastating': Crofton mill closure threatens many more companies
Paul Beltgens is one of hundreds in the Cowichan Valley, left scrambling by Domtar's sudden announcement Tuesday that it is closing the massive Crofton mill.
The owner of independent sawmill Paulcan Enterprises in Chemainus, told CHEK News Thursday, that the forest industry depends on knowing what's coming down the pipe, so the fall out of this closure has shaken many companies.
"I've never seen it so tough. I've gone through the ups and downs of this industry many times. This is by far the most serious and could be the most serious that we've ever seen," said Beltgens, who has been in B.C.'s forest industry for 56 years.

1205 Blanshard Street: This is the former home of Easyhome. At some point that building was meant to be demolished and replaced with an office building, and I heard the developer was cancelling/not renewing commercial leases. Couple years later it appears the redevelopment is stalled. Why are we, the taxpayer, funding private businesses and developers?

Citified.ca posted topic Penny Lane Property Management expanding to Victoria from mid-Island base
lpoutine,
Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "Penny Lane Property Management expanding to Victoria from mid-Island base" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Courtenay-based Penny Lane has expanded into the south Island real-estate/property and strata management market with a new office at Haultain Corners. There is quite a lot of demand for property management services in the Capital, as some firms are getting quite large and boutique firms sometimes struggling to scale. I suspect Penny Lane will do really well on the south Island, and they can help local developers doing work up-Island to manage their properties, something that I get asked about relatively frequently as developers expand north.

Greetings from Provence, where my doctors are still trying to "stabilise" me. You'll be glad to hear that I remain profoundly unstable - possibly because, whenever I briefly emerge from the haze of medication, I find my in-box full of urgent requests to know what I make of what Mark Levin said about what Candace Owens said about what Ben Shapiro said about what Megyn Kelly said about what Josh Hammer said about what Tucker Carlson said to Nick Fuentes.
I haven't appeared on American TV or radio in over four years and, aside from random three-in-the-morning PBS reruns of BBC music specials I made forty years ago, doubt I ever will again. So I don't regard my correspondents' demands as a profitable use of my time.

Victoria Watcher posted topic James Bay to receive heritage designation?
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "James Bay to receive heritage designation?" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The City of Victoria is looking at designating James Bay as a heritage conservation area.
Council asked staff this week to explore the possibility and its implications for development, as part of an ongoing review of the city's heritage program.
The motion was proposed by Mayor Marianne Alto, who noted James Bay residents showed up in droves during public hearings for the recently adopted official community plan to say their neighbourhood had been asked to carry too much of the load of housing and new development.
Alto said James Bay is unique in the city as its first colonial neighbourhood, and is somewhat isolated, with few entry and exit points.
The area also feels the impact of thousands of visitors as home to the city's cruise-ship and Belleville Street terminals, hosts thousands during parades, races and protests, and has seen poorly planned urban sprawl in the form of towers built in the 1970s, the mayor said.

Mango the Flamingo celebrates 50th birthday at Victoria Butterfly Gardens with public party
Mango's 50th birthday is remarkable, considering the average lifespan for a wild flamingo is about 20 years shy of that.
"While these birds typically live up to 30 years in the wild, Mango has far surpassed that, making him one of, if not THE, oldest living flamingo in the world," said Butterfly Gardens in a release Wednesday.
[...]
Mango was first brought to Vancouver Island after he was seized by Canadian authorities who found him being smuggled from Cuba to Toronto.
He was eventually brought to Crystal Garden Tropical Conservatory (https://cheknews.ca/silent-centenary-100th-anniversary-of-crystal-garden-goes-unobserved-1263667/)in downtown Victoria, but when it closed in 2004, he and his bonded partner – Houdini, another male flamingo – were relocated to Victoria Butterfly Gardens in Central Saanich.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
'A garden that love built': A Thanksgiving visit to Victoria's Abkhazi GardenBehind this unassuming urban gem lies a love story worthy of a movie
Going down Fairfield Road, one might notice a little black gate adorned with the name 'Abkhazi Garden.'
Nestled in the heart of Victoria's Gonzales neighbourhood, this small plot of land is home to one of the capital city's best-kept secrets.
With a few meandering gravel paths winding through the lush property, among glaciated rocks and Garry oaks, Abkhazi Garden offers an urban haven for locals and tourists seeking tranquility away from downtown's hustle and bustle.
Nearing its 80th anniversary, the site opened to all on Oct. 13 for Thanksgiving as the season turned to fall.
"The colours have started to change, it's absolutely beautiful, and we're having the final day of our art show and plant sale," said site manager Cherie Miltimore.

Free Press co-founder Bari Weiss named editor in chief of CBS News
Paramount acquired the Free Press for $150 million and named its co-founder Bari Weiss as CBS News' first-ever editor in chief.

Paramount has acquired the Free Press, a four-year-old digital news platform, and will make its controversial co-founder Bari Weiss editor in chief of CBS News, the company announced Monday.
The official announcement came after months of speculation on the deal and Weiss' high-profile role within the news division. Weiss, 41, will report to Paramount Chief Executive David Ellison, who personally courted the former New York Times journalist.
The union of the Free Press and CBS News will be one of the most closely watched lab experiments in the modern media era. Weiss has no experience in television or running an editorial operation on the scale of CBS News, which has more than 1,000 employees.

Victoria ranked most anxious city in Canada according to new study
A new study has found that Victoria, known for its laid-back, seaside lifestyle, might not be as relaxed as many think.
In fact, the city has just been named the most anxious city in Canada.
The research, conducted by Compare the Market, looked at online search trends for anxiety-related terms in major Canadian cities.
It found that people in Victoria are searching for phrases like "work burnout" and "work stress" more than anyone else in the country.
-----------------------------
Interesting results. I wonder if this is more reflective of the 'woke victim' mentality that is so prevalent here, than anything like true work stress.

Lantern festival lights up Esquimalt this weekendEsquimalt Lantern Festival, one of the most popular annual events in the township, runs for two days this week, with everything from music and lanterns to puppets and interactive art installations spread throughout Gorge Park & Pavilion.

A pre-sunset gathering kicks off the Friday schedule at 5:30 p.m., with live music, face paint, food vendors, and giant puppets joining the Nikkei Cultural Society, which will demonstrate how attendees can add a Japanese symbol to their lanterns. The park is open at 7:30 p.m., and will feature activities that include an Enchanted Forest, Magical Gardens, and Mystical Beach. Local musician Brooke Maxwell will lead Happy Cat Karaoke Choir at 8 p.m., with the event winding down at 10 p.m.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Glitch Bar and Games Room
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Glitch Bar and Games Room" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A former Vancouver staple could be making its way to downtown Victoria.
Glitch Bar and Games Room is seeking a new liquor primary licence for 759 Yates St., the former home of Yates Street Taphouse, which closed in May 2023.
The notice of application, posted on the door of the building, proposes a venue with a 275-person capacity and licensed hours from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., daily.
The location has been empty for more than two years, leaving a prime downtown spot open for a new business.
Victoria city council is now inviting written feedback from property owners and occupants in the area, with comments being accepted until Sept. 29, 2025.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Free little libraries
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Free little libraries" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) invites people from across the region to celebrate the charm of little free libraries (LFL) by sharing their favourite real-life stories about them.
The call for stories is part of the lead-up to the network's 1,000 Little Free Library Festival, a free community event happening Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oaklands Community Centre (2827 Belmont Ave.).
Little free libraries are little book boxes that operate on the principle of "leave a book, take a book." LFLs come in all shapes and sizes and can be found throughout the region. While most share books, there is a growing number of LFLs that share plants, seeds, toys, yarn, household items, board games, puzzles, art supplies, art, food and more.
Since 2017, the GVPN has been running the Pocket Places Project, which maps, promotes, stocks and helps build LFLs across the Capital Regional District (CRD).
To date, the project has delivered more than 128,000 books to LFLs across the CRD, mapped out more than 1,000 LFLs and helped set up more than 135 LFLs.
"Whenever I talk to someone about little free libraries, they always have a story to share," said Teale Phelps Bondaroff, volunteer lead of the project, in a release.

Spinnakers Expands Let's Talk Program – and
Let's Talk Health Society Pushes for More Public Conversation Spaces
Lower crime, boost health, fight loneliness—one conversation at a time.
Victoria, BC – August 22 – After a lively and successful summer run in July and August, Spinnakers is making its Let's Talk program a permanent feature. The original pilot, held on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. throughout the summer, gave guests a simple and welcoming way to share a table and conversation with someone they had never met before.
Now, anyone can take part by picking up a Let's Talk card at the hostess desk. The hostess will seat you with the next person who has also opted in, ensuring your conversation partner is inviting and ready to connect.
"Times have changed and you can't just walk up to someone and say, 'Hey, do you want to be my friend?'" said Spinnakers owner, Paul Hadfield. "But this structure makes it natural and easy—because you know the other person is also there to welcome you. This is a great way for people to come and enjoy the pub and potentially meet a few new friends. After all, that is the essence of what a pub is all about."
Media Invitation: Join Us at Spinnakers
Members of the press are warmly invited to experience the program firsthand:
📍 Spinnakers Brewpub, Victoria

In addition to Spinnakers, Murchie's (7:30 a.m.–11 a.m.), Whistle Buoy Brewing Company, and Green Cuisine in Market Square, and Pagliacci's (11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) are now offering Let's Talk cards—making it even easier for people across downtown Victoria to connect with someone new over coffee, lunch, or a pint.

In addition to Spinnakers, Murchie's (7:30 a.m.–11 a.m.), Whistle Buoy Brewing Company, and Green Cuisine in Market Square, and Pagliacci's (11:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) are now offering Let's Talk cards—making it even easier for people across downtown Victoria to connect with someone new over coffee, lunch, or a pint.

VIDEO: Best of the City trawls Victoria in search of the best fish & chipsPair of reporters visits six Greater Victoria restaurants in search of the best battered bites https://www.vicnews.com/local-news/video-best-of-the-city-trawls-victoria-in-search-of-the-best-fish-chips-8128737 (https://www.vicnews.com/local-news/video-best-of-the-city-trawls-victoria-in-search-of-the-best-fish-chips-8128737) They declared Sindy's Fish O Chips the winner.
Fish O Chips - Sidney (10153 Resthaven Dr.)
The first spot did not disappoint. The service was great and fast, and the portion arguably had the biggest piece of fish in this review gauntlet.
Speaking of which, the fish was just the right thickness, was light, well-cooked, firm, and incredibly flaky.
The batter was perfectly crispy and golden brown, with beautiful crunchy bits. Although it lacked a bit of saltiness – after all, it's always better to be under-salted than over-salted – it made up for it in flavour and texture. The chips, according to Ben, were the closest to the "real" thing. Thicker than your original french fries, the outside was golden brown, and the inside was soft and fulsome. However, the chips at the bottom of the dish became a bit too soggy for our liking – perhaps because of the steam generated by the dish's heat.
This British classic was served with a good portion of coleslaw and a small portion of tartar sauce. Although the portion was on the small side, the tartar sauce was full-bodied, sweet, tangy and well balanced.
The price for this order was $22, which isn't cheap nor too expensive.
Overall, Fish O Chips starts off as a contender to be reckoned with.
