lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Federal Bill C-21: handgun ban extended to hunting rifles" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you who may not be following the Bill C-21 issue, the Liberals are being accused of pulling a fast one with their handgun ban by quietly extending it to a large assortment of long guns, many of which are used for hunting or shooting fowl, or even important self-protection in the wilderness. This has upset Canada's hunting community, and indigenous communities that rely on those firearms. Both NDP and Conservative MPs are objecting to this and calling for a re-think, including one Liberal MP that has broken rank.
That we are a country with a vast wilderness, with lots of large predators in huge areas with no cell coverage and no ability to seek medical aid or otherwise, and we cannot carry sidearms for self protection, to then turn around and expand a full-on handgun ban to a large cross spectrum of hunting rifles and shotguns is hard to understand.
For those who may not know, Canada banned fully automatic guns in the 70s. And our semi-auto firearms are limited to five cartridges in a magazine. The federal government also banned approximately 1,500 "assault style" guns under the current government, which itself was controversial as a bunch of guns were banned because they looked a certain way but performed like grandpa's hunting rifle. Just the other month, the Liberals froze the acquisition and trading or handguns, full on.
Now they want to extend am earlier "assault style" ban onto old school rifles and shotguns that are the back bone of hunting.
Circle back to the vast wilderness with large predators and no cell coverage over large expanses of land, and tell me how that makes sense, under the guise that the Liberals say their only goal is to make the streets of Canada safer but they don't admit that the vast majority of guns used in criminal activity in Canada are illegally imported by criminal organizations, many of which (guns) are already banned in Canada and have been for a very long time.
In other words, criminals are not going to stop importing illegal firearms, because hunters are banned from using the best tools for the task at hand, or people in the wilderness who rely on specific firearms for protection must now figure out alternate firearms, which may not be sufficient to protect them, depending on where Bill C-21 lands.
Which leads us to this interesting scenario for a political party:
------------ QUOTE ----------
On the bright side for Justin Trudeau's gang, even now they have a constituency that will applaud every new package of gun control measures as a "step in the right direction," even if the step is much smaller than promised or in an unanticipated or nonsensical direction. Case in point: The AR-15 rifle, favourite of mass shooters, has been top of this constituency's gun-ban list for nearly 30 years. The Liberals were always happy to nod along with them, but it wasn't until 2020 — immediately after the massacre in Nova Scotia — that the Liberals finally got around to banning it.
(You can see the problem, strategically: Now that they've banned it, they can't raise money by promising to ban it anymore.)
The Liberals still have that constituency even now — especially in Quebec — even as Bill C-21 falls to pieces. An editorial in Tuesday's La Presse perfectly summed up this viewpoint: Vincent Brousseau-Pouliot conceded the bill had been "poorly explained"; that defining the "assault weapons" to be banned "in the middle of the legislative process (was) frankly bizarre"; and that only "a small percentage of crimes committed with firearms are committed with legal weapons." Nevertheless, he concluded, C-21 "sends a clear message: we want to reduce as much as possible the risk of another killing."
…
It's at odds with the Assembly of First Nations, which on Thursday passed an emergency resolution in defence of Indigenous hunting rights and opposing the Liberal gun bill.
It's at odds with some in the NDP, the party currently supporting the Liberals in a supply-and-confidence motion. (The NDP has always had a better read on rural and north-of-60 life than the Liberals. The fate of the long-gun registry was a key point of division under Jack Layton's leadership.)
And it's at odds with the normally quiet majority of Canadians who think gun control is good but that hunting is a perfectly legitimate activity — i.e., the status quo, the many virtues of which the Liberals can never seem to accept on this issue. That majority is now uncommonly engaged in and informed about this issue, because the Liberals have made such a hash of it. It's not just conservative media outlets reporting on it, and it calls very much into question the Liberals' basic competencies as a government.
…
By rights, a similar reckoning awaits the Liberals on firearms. We all know the vast majority of "crime guns" come across the border — and that's after countless pledges over the years by Conservative and Liberal governments alike to crack down on it. Demonizing Conservatives or gun control advocates won't stop it. Only stopping it will stop it. That seems to be a very difficult task, but going after legal gun owners is no substantial substitute.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Hero Sandwich Bar
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Hero Sandwich Bar" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are plenty of sandwich shops in town, but one stands out above them all.
Hero Sandwich Bar is an elusive and incredibly delicious sandwich restaurant that has now done three pop-ups in Standard Pizza just off Pandora Avenue.
The sandwich shop was started by a self-proclaimed 'sandwich mommy' named Julie who works a 9-to-5 for the government, who also has a passion for sandwiches that set her on a path to become a restauranteur.
Sometimes they are called hoagies, grinders or subs but in New York they are called Italian heroes.

Anyone with a family connection to gold on board the SS Pacific — a paddlewheeler that sank off the B.C. coast with the loss of at least 275 lives in 1875 — has a chance to stake their claim.
Last month, a U.S. company lodged papers in the United States District Court in Seattle (https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/rockfish-ss-pacific-salvage-rights.pdf?utm_source=victoria%20times%20colonist&utm_campaign=victoria%20times%20colonist%3A%20outbound&utm_medium=referral) stating it had located what it believes is the wreck of the Pacific at around 1,500 feet deep on the western edge of the Juan de Fuca Strait. By comparison, the Titanic sits at around 12,500 feet in the Atlantic Ocean.

lpoutine,
Matt R. has just posted a new topic entitled "Nautical Nellies" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dinner on Saturday was the suggestion of a friend I was meeting up with, who really wanted fresh oysters. Typically I'd head to Ferris' for that, but we pressed on.
No online reservations available, as they were sold out, but we were able to get a table with a phone call.
Arrived and were seated promptly, as the other part of the group had already arrived. Restaurant was maybe half full at the time, just before 6 pm.
Started with a couple of French 75's and two dozen oysters, so far so good! Continued on with a Pilsner and the beef carpaccio, which was prepared a little differently than I am used to, but it was a smash hit. Superb, and I'd go back again just for that and the green onion pancakes it was served with.
My main was a 10oz New York, some roasted potatoes and Brussels sprouts, which was just what I wanted. Cooked perfectly, well seasoned and hot. Everything was piping hot, which I appreciate. Others had a filet and lobster tail combo, seafood hot pot, some rolls from the sushi bar and crab cakes. All very well received! We had a place to get to, so skipped dessert, but next time I'll have some for sure.
Service was excellent, attentive and funny without hovering.
Not on the "cheap" side but worth it for a night out. Total bill for my three folks was less than two harbour air tickets so we took the ferry home.

I have some fond memories of old bike stores in town.
I don't think I or my family bought bikes too often. But if you had one, they required some professional maintenance from time to time.
Old:
Gordon's on the hill on Hillside between Cook and Quadra.
Reno Bikes on Government Street.

lpoutine,
Awaiting Juno has just posted a new topic entitled "City of Victoria 2022 - 2026 Council - Discussion" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
With swearing in happening next week - figured a new council merits a new discussion forum.
The city has no end of challenges to manage over the coming years, and in a context that is challenging. We are coming out of a pandemic that has been difficult - with declines in public safety, interest rates now surging and inflation running at decades long highs. We have a public that wasn't happy with the last council (see: MNP report) and will likely need the next council to win them over.
Looking at the council coming in - there are some reasons to be hopeful and some reasons to be hesitant.
First (likely) orders of business - the Missing Middle Housing Initiative (likely to pass), the MNP Governance Review and the redevelopment of Harris Green.

The James Bay Neighbourhood Association was quite receptive to this design, which stems from and follows guidelines adopted for the Victoria Accord's legislative precinct development vision.
And thank you, Kapten, for the heads-up!

Mike K. posted topic Crabtoberfest - Victoria's take on Port Angeles' CrabFest
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Crabtoberfest - Victoria's take on Port Angeles' CrabFest" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Maritime Museum of BC's 1st annual Crabtoberfest hits our plates on November 5, 2022, at Pier A (The Breakwater District at Ogden Point) from 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM. Presented by Finest at Sea and beer sponsor Phillips Brewing & Malting Co., this is a community crab dinner like no other, held right here in Victoria, BC.
Enjoy a crab or ½ crab dinner (or vegetarian chili), hit the dance floor with a live brass band, sing and stomp along to sea shanties, and enjoy contests, games and a 50/50 raffle.
Beerhall sponsored by Phillips Brewing & Malting Co. opens at 5:30 PM with music, games, and prizes. Finest at Sea starts dishing out crabs at 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM, with more music, games, and prizes.
"The idea of a community dinner at Pier A, right in front of the Maritime Museum of BC's beloved sailboats Trekka and Tilikum, just needed a theme and a name," said Anya Baker, the Events and Development Coordinator at the Museum, "with crabs from Finest at Sea and beer from Phillips Brewing & Malting Co., it could only become a one-of-a-kind festival. We can't wait to see everyone for our very first Victoria Crabtoberfest…in November!"
All proceeds support the Maritime Museum of BC, to continue operations and help with the running of school and public programs. A 50/50 raffle and the Phillips Beer Tower Live Auction will also be held in support of Museum operations.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Gulf Islands issues and news
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Gulf Islands issues and news" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
As the drought deepens — about three months now with only scant traces of rain — my wife and I do as always: flush the toilet as few times as possible, take navy showers, and hand-water the garden.
Unlike those living in surrounding urban centres, Gulf Islanders cannot rely on distant watersheds. They must make do with whatever precipitation falls on their little piece of terrain.
Water scarcity is a major reason the islands cannot be developed like any other area.
Another consideration is legislative. The Islands Trust Act was passed by the provincial government in 1974 to protect the Gulf Islands' fragile ecosystems from overdevelopment. It created the Islands Trust with a mandate to "preserve and protect the Trust Area and its unique amenities and environment for the benefit of residents of the Trust Area and the province generally."
In 1974, the spirit and intent of those words was probably clear to everyone. But today, as people pressure mounts, the interpretation is being challenged by those who want fewer restrictions.

Mike K. posted topic David Eby’s housing plan for British Columbia - thoughts and discussion
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "David Eby's housing plan for British Columbia - thoughts and discussion" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a primer for David Eby's housing plan for BC: https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/b-c-ndp-leadership-race-ebys-housing-policy-includes-flipping-tax-legalized-secondary-suites-and-increased-density (https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/b-c-ndp-leadership-race-ebys-housing-policy-includes-flipping-tax-legalized-secondary-suites-and-increased-density)
Key points to consider:
- density targets for each municipality, which if not met, would allow the province to override municipal "nimybism"
- legalized duplexes province-wide
- three-plexes permitted in urban centres where single-family zoning is in place (presumably duplex zoning, too)
- "flipping tax" that decreases through 2 years post-possession
- right of first refusal for non-profits to buy rental complexes before REITs have access
- $500 million towards tenant anti-displacement efforts, to prevent or address renovictions

In a brief statement published on the tournament website, the resort says it is continuing "to take steps to ensure the absolute safety and well-being of our team."
"We were extremely upset to hear about highly inappropriate behaviour connected to one of our annual events," the resort said. "Our first concern is for our staff, and we are responding to the needs of those affected."
Rumours on Reddit/Twitter imply all of the restaurant staff walked out due to sexual misconduct towards one or more of their co-workers.

Mike K. posted topic City of Victoria street lights - are they too dark?
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "City of Victoria street lights - are they too dark?" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Does anyone realize just how dark the City of Victoria has become by night? The street lights are so dim now, that you literally encounter pockets of darkness as you walk down the street. I didn't realize it was as dark as it was, until last night.
I know there have been changes to the LEDs on light standards, but was the intent to darken the city so much?

The Victoria International Wine Festival will move into a new home for its upcoming edition, which is set for Sept. 18-24 at the Car Shop at Bayview Place.

"We want people to be able to gain knowledge about new wines in a format that isn't intimidating," he said. "We then match this experience with another, where wines selected by a panel of sommeliers will impress even the most experienced wine enthusiast."

Mike K. posted topic Federal Liberal Scandal: Nova Scotia mass shooting
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Federal Liberal Scandal: Nova Scotia mass shooting" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
Three years after the events of the SNC-Lavalin affair, the Trudeau government is once again facing down accusations that they actively meddled in the Canadian justice system to achieve a political end.
With SNC-Lavalin, the charge was that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's office pressured his justice minister to unilaterally drop bribery charges against a Liberal-allied engineering firm. This time around, it's that Trudeau's public safety minister pressed RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki to "jeopardize" a mass-shooting investigation so that they could push a gun control package.
And in both cases, the allegations have come from some very reputable sources. The most inculpating details of the SNC-Lavalin affair came directly from Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould herself. With the RCMP scandal, the government's alleged actions were outed by its own federal inquiry.
The Mass Casualty Commission – the federal inquiry into Canada's worst-ever mass shooting – last week released a detailed report into how the RCMP managed its public communications in the wake of the April 2020 massacre that killed 22 Nova Scotians.
On page 103, the report outlines how Lucki allegedly dressed-down Nova Scotia investigators for their initial refusal to release details about the firearms used by the shooter.
"She had promised the Minister of Public Safety and the Prime Minister's Office that the RCMP, (we) would release this information," read handwritten notes by Nova Scotia RCMP Superintendent Darren Campbell after an April 28 meeting with the Commissioner.

The political intent was, it is alleged, to paint the weapons used in the incident as assault-style rifles available to Canadians, while the guns were actually illegally imported. The immediacy of the assault style firearm ban, therefore, was predicated upon on a mass shooting using weapons not available in Canada, making the ban a largely superfluous pursuit based on aesthetics and not the capability of the weapons.

lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Spot prawn, fiddle and rugby festival" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
If you're a fan of juicy B.C. spot prawns, rugby and fiddles — there's a festival coming up this month in Victoria that's just for you.
The James Bay Athletic Association is hosting its first annual Spot Prawn and Fiddle Fest Sunday, June 12 in James Bay, with three unusual worlds colliding to create what will surely be an unforgettable experience.
The inaugural festival, produced by CCGF Event Services Inc. — the same company that put on this year's Cook Street Village Block Party — runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in MacDonald Park and will feature rugby exhibitions, kids play area, a fiddle contest, and a flatbed truck full of B.C. spot prawns called the "prawn spa."

lpoutine,
JimV has just posted a new topic entitled "RBCM" in forum "Urban Design".

Hard to ignore this fiasco. Even though it isn't strictly speaking a Victoria issue it certainly affects us. In his usual way Stirling is trying to concoct some conspiracy theory to explain the obvious. It's just wokery, which started with removing the Old Town exhibit (easily the most popular gallery in the museum.)
Governments got so used to a compliant public in the pandemic they probably thought this would be meekly accepted too. Instead, the blowback has been loud and widespread. Looks like it's approaching fast ferries dimensions, only sooner.
I suspect Horgan knew this was a bad idea but let his ministers, especially Mark, run with it. He hasn't looked well since his cancer therapy. Maybe that had something to do with it. In any case, the timing was sensationally bad, the rollout bungled and the alleged explanation flimsy and preposterous. He's painted himself into a very small and uncomfortable corner now.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Fernwood, North Park and Quadra-Hillside density/housing push
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Fernwood, North Park and Quadra-Hillside density/housing push" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The City of Victoria will consider adopting new neighbourhood plans for Fernwood, North Park and Quadra-Hillside to help create new and diverse housing options.
The committee of the whole voted Thursday to move forward with new plans for the three neighbourhoods, which could mean new housing options, new housing designation zones focusing on rental housing and affordability, increased density and new "village" areas.
The new plans paint a picture of increasing housing capacity in several zones, in some cases allowing more multi-family projects in traditional residential zones.
A staff report presented to council said there could be a significant increase in housing capacity along Bay Street, Finlayson Avenue and Quadra Street, and throughout Fernwood and North Park. There would also be enhanced village centres along Bay Street, Hillside Avenue and within Fernwood and North Park that would offer more opportunity for new shops and services to serve a growing population.

Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "Island Realm Real Estate | Formerly The Condo Group" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".

The Condo Group, founded 15-years-ago, is now Island Realm. The company has transitioned into a full-service agency covering the entirety of the residential real-estate spectrum.
We had a chance to sit down with Tony Zarsadias to talk about the changes, and what's in-store for the company.
A quick note of interest is Island Realm has opened a second office in the CRD, this one downtown on Discovery Street at Store Street.

lpoutine,
dasmo has just posted a new topic entitled "Alternative news, history and theories." in forum "Online Media".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Discussing the alternative news, history, predictions, conspiracies etc. Ridicule it, debunk it, prove it, Whatever. I also want a place to rant about the alternative media because it is also heresy to do that in the online circles that gather around these flames...

Victoria Watcher posted topic Douglas Street CKEK editorial
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Douglas Street CKEK editorial" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The majority of Douglas Street is a grimy, decaying thoroughfare that would resemble a ghost town if it weren't for the constant stream of double-decker buses at Fort Street. When was the last time somebody asked a friend to go spend the day hanging out on Douglas Street? Maybe if they are going to the Public Market at the Hudson, if they are seeking typically yuppie activities.

lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Hong Kong House" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not Victoria but...meh....everyone from here eventually and inevitably hoofs it up to and through Nanaimo which is where I was yesterday and overnight. Had never had much success finding decent Chinese in town but I have to say HKH is excellent for what it is; what it is as it turns out is an immensely popular, very spacious and busy buffet style Chinese place in the north end of town, near and just behind the Country Club Centre.
Staff is super efficient and polite and the buffet options are very plentiful (you can obviously order off the menu if you prefer) and everything I tried I enjoyed very much. Special shout out to the szechuan green beans/shrimp . Definitely a 'recommend' if you're in town and have a hankering for some tasty Chinese that won't bankrupt you -
