Victoria Watcher posted topic Street preacher issues and discussion

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Street preacher issues and discussion" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
People walking downtown – or just waiting for a bus – say the City of Victoria should crack down on street preachers who they say are disturbing their peace.

Some religious groups stand in spaces around downtown, but just hand out literature.

Others are preaching loud enough to be heard over traffic.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Hardware stores and hardware issues thread

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Hardware stores and hardware issues thread" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
With the closure of Capital Iron, Victoria family business Lumberworld has added a specialty barbecue section to its Quadra Street location.
They've even hired some of the experts who formerly worked at Capital Iron, the company said.
"We wanted to bring new life into our company and add to what we offer our customers," said Frank Clarke, operation manager at Lumberworld. "Living in a location where we can barbecue 12 months of the year, we wanted to ensure Victorians had a place to continue to shop for specialty items with experts to help."
Mark Bradley and Mark Besner, the so-called Grill Marks, made their way from their long-term tenures at Capital Iron to Lumberworld and set up a new department.
The duo worked for Capital Iron for a combined 10 years, the company said, and they are now offering charcoal, gas, wood pellet and self-feeding pellet barbecue options and are sharing their wealth of knowledge on all things grilling.
"We pride ourselves on a white glove service for our barbecue customers which means we assemble, test and deliver the new barbeque right to your door and most importantly recycle your old one," said Clarke. "We want to make it easy for people to get exactly what they need and want."
The section also includes a focus on outdoor pizza ovens, a growing trend.

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "The chicken thread" in forum "Food and Dining, Hotel and Hospitality Industry Discussions".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
So much fried chicken, so little time.
That's the situation faced by Victoria diners as the number of restaurants specializing in fried chicken has exploded in the past year.
To be clear, many restaurants in Victoria offer fried chicken on their menus, but now there is a long list of eateries actually specializing in it.

Victoria Watcher posted topic [Vic West] 633 Belton | Residential w/no on-site parking

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "[Vic West] 633 Belton | Residential w/no on-site parking" in forum "City of Victoria".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
In what could be a first for Victoria, the city has narrowly supported moving forward with a six-unit houseplex in a residential neighbourhood that – sort of – won't include any parking.
If approved at a future council meeting, the Vic West development would be a net increase of five homes on the property where a single-dwelling home currently sits at 633 Belton Avenue.
There's a recognition that the overwhelming majority of Greater Victoria still sees roadblocks to suitable car-free living, but, for the proposal's movers, the Vic West site has everything. The location has a transit route along Craigflower Road half a block away, while a few peddles would connect a cycling resident of the houseplex from their front steps to the Galloping Goose Trail connection around the corner.

________________

Councillors, in a 6-3 split, went with an alternate option staff provided around advancing the houseplex during Thursday's committee of the whole meeting. Those for and against agreed the project was creative and had a lot of upsides, but parking concerns and some Vic West residents opposing it swayed dissenters."This is a really fascinating and innovative proposal," Coun. Jeremy Caradonna said before voting for a public hearing.
The two- and three-bedroom building includes secured adaptable units, yard space and a neighbourhood-reflecting pitched roof – aimed to reduce its mass . The city said it fits with Victoria's goals for diverse housing types and aligns with objectives in community and neighbourhood plans despite some minor breaches.
The proposal needs parking, height and setback variances, with the latter for protruding stairs and side yard heat pumps. Overall staff said it came in under the site's envisioned density allotment and called it a sensitive approach to infill development.
