Mike K. posted topic Highrises consumer more energy than other forms of housing

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Highrises consumer more energy than other forms of housing" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I recall one member of this forum leaving, when we had an exchange about this very subject.
It takes huge amounts of energy to sustain homes in highrise buildings.
------------ QUOTE ----------
But taller and denser isn't necessarily better for the environment, according to a new study published in the journal npj Urban Sustainability. By studying the full lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of urban development—from the production and transportation of the building materials to the energy required to use and live in buildings over time—an international team of researchers has found that high-rise cities are actually producing more total emissions than shorter, but still dense, urban areas.

lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "The Daily Wire" in forum "Online Media".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A new poll released this week found that Ben Shapiro — the co-founder and editor emeritus of The Daily Wire and host of "The Ben Shapiro Show," the top conservative podcast in the nation — is ranked as the most trusted major conservative media personality.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/ben-shapiro-the-most-trusted-major-right-wing-media-personality-poll (https://www.dailywire.com/news/ben-shapiro-the-most-trusted-major-right-wing-media-personality-poll)
The poll from WPA Intelligence surveyed 1,000 verified registered voters across the U.S. in mid-December and found that the most trusted major media personality was Left-of-center comedian Bill Maher, host of HBO's "Real Time."
Among respondents who were familiar with the personalities, 52% trusted Maher, 49% trusted Shapiro, 46% trusted Joe Rogan, 43% trusted Tucker Carlson, and 42% trusted Jake Tapper.
Rogan is host of "The Joe Rogan Experience," the most downloaded podcast in the world. Carlson's program 'Tucker Carlson Tonight" was the highest rated show on Fox News.
The poll found that the total net trust level — when accounting for Democrats, Republicans, and independents — for each of the personalities was Maher +3%, Shapiro -1%, Rogan -7%, Tapper -8%, and Carlson -11%.

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Developer Earl Large to give away 3,000 books" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So last year, the 87-year-old collaborated with artists around the world to finally publish 40 years of his thoughts and musings, resulting in Living Large, The Coffee Table Book that will Change Your Life, a 225-page collection he describes as words of encouragement and contemplation.
Large published 12,000 copies and has sold most of them through Amazon and other online portals, but now wants to give 3,000 copies away to the people of the Victoria in the spirit of the holidays and a way of saying thank you to the community that's supported him over the years.
"When I turned 40, to keep me sane, I started writing a poem on the first day of every month," says Large. "And I finally thought 'why don't I put them into a book?' I can tell you that it was fun to put together.

Victoria Watcher posted topic (No name yet) Pub at Esquimalt Town Centre
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "(No name yet) Pub at Esquimalt Town Centre" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Esquimalt residents have wondered for years about what commercial options would be going in at the Town Square development.
Now we know a little more although more details will be forthcoming on Dec. 18 when Aragon Properties will offer more information at a news conference at 3:30 p.m. at 505 Park Pl.
A public house will occupy 2,930 sf commercial retail space at the corner of Park Place and Esquimalt Road at Esquimalt Town Square, leased to local operator Demian Merino.
Born and raised in Victoria, Merino has been in the restaurant business for over 30 years. Early in his career, he worked for Freehouse Collective (formerly the Donnelly Group) in Vancouver, who owns and manages over ten pubs and restaurants across the city. Most recently, he was the general manager of the Victoria Pub Company, managing local favorites like Bard & Banker and Irish Times.
The new public house is slated to open in late spring 2024 at 101-505 Park Pl. in Esquimalt.

Mike K. posted topic Cowichan Valley news, issues
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Cowichan Valley news, issues" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hockey stick can go, say Cowichan residents. From the CVRD:
The CVRD will seek proposals to take ownership of the World's Largest Hockey Stick!
Through CVRD Board direction, staff ran a public engagement survey regarding future direction of the WLHS from June 19 to September 30, 2023. The results of this survey found that the majority of respondents indicated:
• it is not important to maintain the world record for the largest hockey stick and puck
• the WLHS does not provide significant importance to the region
• they do not support replacing the WLHS
Considering the survey results and the high cost of replacement, on November 30, 2023, the Cowichan Core Recreation Commission directed staff to move ahead with decommissioning the WLHS in 2024.
Knowing there is likely public interest in taking ownership of the WLHS structure in its current form, the CVRD will be accepting proposals from community organizations or individuals wishing to take and make use of the structure through a formal Expression of Interest process.
More information on submitting proposals to take ownership of the WLHS as part of the Expression of Interest process will soon be available at https://ow.ly/2zMZ50QfhVO (https://ow.ly/2zMZ50QfhVO).

Victoria Watcher posted topic Single-egress stairs
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Single-egress stairs" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Province adopted the British Columbia Building and Fire Codes (BC Codes 2024) to provide people with a greater level of building safety and to make new buildings more sustainable, resilient and accessible.
"As we take historic steps to build more homes for people faster, we are also taking action to make sure homes are safe, accessible and more resilient to climate change," said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Housing. "We have to find ways to innovate and build differently. Over the next year, the Province will lead a discussion on enabling single-egress stairs in the BC Building Code."
Key updates to the building code will require all new buildings to:
provide one living space that is designed not to exceed 26 C;have power-operated doors in all building entrances and universal washrooms; andhave an elevator in all large two- and three-storey apartment buildings. Additional updates to the building code focus on accessibility, mass-timber construction and radon safety.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
WHY VICTORIA IS NUMBER ONE The Globe and Mail (BC Edition)25 Nov 2023SALMAAN FAROOQUI, VICTORIA
"...All these years of growth have resulted in a vibrant city. A comprehensive Globe and Mail data analysis project in partnership with Environics Analytics Group Ltd. found Victoria to be Canada's most livable city overall. Almost any resident you ask will agree on the key components that make it a great place to live: access to nature, incredible bike infrastructure, mild weather that makes a camping trip possible in the winter and the lifestyle of a midsized city.
The Globe looked at 10 overall categories, including Transportation, Housing, Climate and Amenities. It ranked 439 communities across Canada by analyzing specific variables within each category.
For example, Victoria was rated Canada's best city for Amenities based on its high rankings for proximity to grocery stores, parks and libraries, among other factors. It was rated fifth overall in the Transportation category based on the high proportion of residents who live near a transit stop, and for being a highly walkable community.
Victoria's mild climate, which rarely gets too hot or cold and features relatively low amounts of rain, meant the city was rated third best in the country for Climate."

lpoutine,
dkuitu has just posted a new topic entitled "New Zoning Rules in BC (TOD)" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
TOA Type 2 for Victoria, BC, the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Policy Framework aims to enhance urban density and promote the use of public transit by setting specific development guidelines around bus exchanges:Within 200 meters of a bus exchange, new developments can reach a Floor Area Ratio (FAR) of up to 3.5, allowing for quite dense construction relative to the size of the land parcel. Buildings in this zone can be constructed up to 10 stories high, generally characterized as mid-rise structures. From 201 to 400 meters away, the allowable density decreases with a maximum FAR of 2.5. In this slightly less dense band, the building height is capped at 6 stories, suitable for low-rise buildings or townhouses. This policy encourages a walkable community around transit hubs, with a gradual transition from denser and taller buildings close to the bus exchanges to less dense and lower-rise structures as one moves away, supporting a mixed-use, transit-friendly urban environment.

Light-Keeper posted topic Centennial Square Revitalization
lpoutine,
Light-Keeper has just posted a new topic entitled "Centennial Square Revitalization" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Downtown Victoria Business Association will be leaving it's office space at #20 Centennial Square and relocating to #200 764 Yates Street at the end of October.
The City of Victoria wants the space for Bylaw Enforcement offices. More blanked out windows along the Centennial Square Arcade. Row after row. Uninviting and repellant.
How will this help the revitalization of Centennial Square? The 2018 Centennial Square Action Plan urges the City to return the arcade spaces below the parking lot to commercial use. The City is in the process of expending a further $750,000 for the revitalization design and planning process but won't take the advice they previously paid for.
Back when the retail sale of cannabis was first approved, the City would not allow retailers to blank out their storefronts. They had to show something of interest to the passerby. But the City seems to do this with impunity!.

The Times, quoting an insider, said that the former host of "The Daily Show (https://www.salon.com/topic/the_daily_show)" told his staff that Apple's executives were particularly concerned about the show taking on China and artificial intelligence (https://www.salon.com/2023/09/23/are-we-witnessing-the-of-the-writer-facing-the-ai-crossroads-in-class-and-on-the-page/).
Stewart and his staff also predicted they'd face more pushback as the 2024 presidential campaign season accelerated, another source said.

China is Apple's third largest consumer market after Europe and the Americas. Those concerns were always going to be on a collision course with Stewart's application of inquisitive skepticism to, say, the problematic repressive policies of a certain Asian superpower.
"The Problem with Jon Stewart" could have chosen to ignore China, but for how long? That nation owns nearly $860 billion of the United States' debt (https://usafacts.org/articles/which-countries-own-the-most-us-debt/). It's a major trade and manufacturing partner and influences our politics to a significant degree. Most of the newest iPhones are made there.

It's a major trade and manufacturing partner and influences our politics to a significant degree. Most of the newest iPhones are made there.

Frame Properties is hopeful council will review its 15-unit townhome proposal for 2540-2542 Shelbourne Street in the not too distant future, after a lengthy municipal planning process. I had a chance to chat with the developer recently, and we spoke of how their application process has gone over the years, and how things are changing with the new council. Frame issued a statement in response to several questions that were posed, and it's clear that the updates to MMHI are what should have been in the initial roll-out.

An international circus show is coming to Victoria and Nanaimo.
The American Crown Circus and Circo Osorio (https://www.americancrowncircus.com/show/) has set up a massive tent at the Woodgrove Centre in Nanaimo, where performances will be held until Oct. 2.
Then, the circus show comes to the Mayfair Shopping Centre in Victoria from Oct. 5 to Oct. 9.
The family-friendly show includes acrobats, a motorcycle "globe of death" stunt cage, and other performances put on by professionals from across North America.
"Children and adults will be captivated as aerial artistry unfolds, motorcycles madness, acrobats defying the law of gravity inches from their seats," reads the event's website.
There will be two shows each day, except for on Oct. 9, when there will be one evening show – for a total of 11 shows over the course of the week.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Model Railway Show - Victoria Model Railway Club
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Model Railway Show - Victoria Model Railway Club" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
All aboard for the Model Railway Show on Sunday
Bend down, cock your head to one side and you might hear the "All Aboard!" announcement by the miniature railroad station master as the rolling stock gets moving at the Victoria Model Railway Show, Sunday at the Mary Winspear Centre.
This is the 31st anniversary of the show, put on by members of the Victoria Model Railway Club.
Members will be bringing examples of different scale (sized) trains — HO, Lionel O and Garden-scale — with HO making up 65 per cent of hobby trains.
Up to four trains and up to 20 box cars will constantly be on the move during the show, running on a 40 by 60-foot highly-detailed model railroad diorama at the centre of the room.
You will see a CNR freight train, a logging train with a Shay locomotive or a GE 44-ton switcher (a diesel-electric locomotive built between 1940 and 1956 typically used for light switching duties) at the show.
"There has been an increase in the number of people to the hobby, thanks to COVID-19," said Ted Alexis, a member of the Victoria Model Railway Club. "During the pandemic people were looking for things to do and discovered, or rediscovered, the hobby."
He said that the two main demographics are seniors and youth.
But younger children are not forgotten, with a "fabulous" Lego layout planned, said Alexis
Visitors wanting to add to their collection can buy or swap a large array of new or used model train-related items found on more than 50 tables.
The show, which organizers expect to draw up to 1,300 visitors, supports the Times Colonist Christmas Fund and C-FAX's Santa's Anonymous.
Admission is $8 for adults, $7 youth and National Model Railroad Association members, $16 family and free for children eight and under if accompanied by an adult. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 24 at the Mary Winspear Centre, 2243 Beacon Ave., Sidney.

Sooke Fall Fair back this weekend for 110th yearThe fair expects to attract 4,000 visitors this year, on par with pre-pandemic numbers
Cheer on Sooke's fastest zucchini, admire the scariest scarecrow, enjoy a pet parade or check out the vegetables, baked goods and needlecraft on display at the Sooke Fall Fair, in the Sooke Community Hall, Saturday and Sunday. It's the 110th year of the fall fair, a community tradition that continues to evolve, while still embracing the area's agricultural roots.
Back in 1913, when the fair began, "they didn't have gluten-free baked goods, no Lego or digital photographs," said Ida McDonald, vice-president of the Sooke Fall Fair Association, which hosts the event.
Sooke residents can enter their produce and creative efforts in hundreds of categories, from baked goods to needlecraft, photography, stories or artwork, with 50 trophies and 300 other prizes up for grabs.

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Work from home" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Labour councils are TWICE as likely to let their staff 'work from the beach' than Tory ones as figures show town halls approved more than 1,350 requests from staff to do their job from abroad
Labour currently controls seven of the top ten councils in terms of the largest numbers of requests approved in the past three years.
This includes Merton Council in south London (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/london/index.html), which approved 251 requests to work from abroad, Islington Council in north London (237) and Leeds City Council (74).
Tory MP Peter Bone said: 'Labour councils cost you more and deliver less.
'Maybe these figures show one of the reasons why. You can get more productivity from people being in the office.'
It comes after the Daily Mail yesterday revealed how hundreds of council staff have been 'working from the beach' (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12476477/HUNDREDS-council-staff-working-beach-WFH.html) – with a ten-fold rise in the number allowed to log in from abroad.
Downing Street yesterday waded into the row over productivity with the Prime Minister's official spokesman saying 'in-office working' should be the 'default'.

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Cattle Point" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On Friday night, hundreds flocked to Cattle Point for a pop-up DJ party whose location was only revealed a few hours prior via text.
The event was the brainchild of Vancouver-based electronic producer and DJ Taelor Deitcher, who is also known by his stage name, Felix Cartal. It's the second pop-up outdoor DJ set the artist has staged this summer in conjunction with his recent studio album release, Into Sunsets.
"Victoria is a pretty easy rip on the ferry, so we just kind of went for it," Deitcher said.
Deitcher and videographer Kyle S. Lee organized the entire event within 48 hours with rented equipment from Long and McQuade and some unloading help from Damon Langford, owner of Eclipse Events.

Sooke residents band together to save beloved local caféThe Stick in the Mud coffee house is now co-op owned and will be renamed Café Vosino
A beloved Sooke coffee house closed its doors Sunday but it will re-open after about 400 community members banded together to purchase the business through a co-op.
Stick in the Mud Coffee House owner David Evans signed the sale papers on Sunday afternoon with Sooke Community Investment Cooperative president Wendy O'Conner in front of a cheering crowd that had come out for the coffee shop's last day of operation.Coffee shop regulars O'Conner, Jim Meunier and Bernie Klassen started a campaign to save the Stick when they learned of the plans to close in April.
Working with Co-Operatives First, a Saskatoon-based co-op creator, the trio formed a co-op and began raising money to purchase the business.
Last minute donations came flying in with more than $16,000 raised on Saturday alone, said O'Conner, adding that the co-op has now raised about 70 per cent of the funds needed.
Evans only decided to sell to the co-op late Saturday night, she said.
Shop employees working Sunday, many of whom had purchased a co-op membership, were overjoyed to learn of the decision.
The coffee shop will be renamed to Cafe Vosino, after V0S 1N0, Sooke's former postal code.

AllseeingEye posted topic Teriyaki House - Sooke Rd/Sooke River Rd
lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Teriyaki House - Sooke Rd/Sooke River Rd" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No you won't find this little dive-ish place in Chinatown or anywhere in the core. Its actually in a small strip-mall like development on Sooke Rd just before you hit the town.
We took our new pooch, a Great Pyrenees called Will, out to Whiffen Spit today to give the big boy some good exercise. Afterwards we were very hungry but had to find a spot where we could sit outside and where Will could sit with us. One thing about this breed, the bigger the body - 130 lbs in this case - the bigger the anxiety and separation attack especially when "mom" is out of sight so where we go, he goes.
Driving back through the town on our way home I remembered this joint from a fishing trip a few years ago to the San Juan River and how we stumbled on it and discovered it was home to some of the greasiest and best tasting burgers I've ever encountered in Victoria. Having dredged up that memory all I could think of was one of those burgers! How disappointed I was to discover it was now called Teriyaki House and owned by a Korean couple - not a likely burger hotspot.
But wow, to heck with the burgers the fare these folks create now is awesome; as you would expect from the name of the place its primarily Asian with a mix of popular Japanese (tempura, Yakisoba, Udon noodles etc) and Korean (spicy chicken, hot pots) and a dash of Chinese standards thrown in along with some more traditional local fare, i.e. fish and chips.
Its not the cheapest place I've ever eaten, and his English is limited and his manners not great - you're sitting at a table outside waiting on the order and he raps sharply on a window from inside saying "you come get food!" - but she does the cooking and what comes out of the tiny kitchen is hot, fresh and super tasty. I had a side order of 4 tempura prawns, clearly right out of the deep fryer (holy CRAP they were good) and a very tasty, very filling order of chicken yakisoba. It ain't fancy but I'll take great home cooked food over overpriced "fancy" every time.
