lpoutine,
Gary H has just posted a new topic entitled "Boxing Day Deals - or Not" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those Boxing Day promotions are often pretty lame.
I subscribe to a rather niche online store that specializes in AV equipment and just have to laugh at their 10% off site-wide Boxing Week promotion - with SOME restrictions/exclusions. Take a look at their email promotion and then the exclusions page.
It reminds me of this classic clip from the movie The Jerk where Steve is describing what a contestant can win...

Looking for examples of SFH area densification that aren't neighbourhood crushers. There are some good older developments in Fernwood. The large lot is about 18,000 sq ft. Could potentially hold 8 townhouses.

The Copper Owl, the upstairs live music venue/bar at Paul's Motor Inn will be under new ownership in the new year. Events/shows booked through January will go ahead, and then then it will shut down for a bit before the new owners relaunch it as whatever they have planned.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Subculture Club - 625 Hillside
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Subculture Club - 625 Hillside" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
never heard of it before but here it is:
https://subcultureclub.org/safe-and-sober/ (https://subcultureclub.org/safe-and-sober/)
Things generally run pretty smoothly at SubClub but when we do have issues 90% of the problems are caused by people who are drunk. This is a little ironic considering we are an ALL-AGES space that doesn't permit drugs or alcohol inside the venue. Unfortunately some people interpret this to simply mean they should get drunk before they come in. When people stay sober we have no problems. When we have events where people are intoxicated we've ended up with cans, cigarette butts, puke and piss in our parking lot THAT OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE TO CLEAN UP. Worse than this is the aggressive, abusive behavior that audience members and volunteers have been subjected to at the hands of intoxicated people.
I care deeply for people struggling with anxiety, depression, and addiction and I understand why people use drugs and alcohol. It's deeply rooted in our culture and one of the most mainstream, bonding behaviors we have. When we're drunk or high it makes us care less about what other people think and feel – that's probably why we're drawn to it, but we want SubCulture Club to be all about caring MORE – about art, about people, and about community.
This isn't about disrespecting people who like to party. There's a time and a place for everything and I strongly believe in letting people live any way they want to. Every other space from bars, to basements, arenas, theaters, and outdoor festivals combine music and drinking. We want SubCulture Club to be a truly ALTERNATIVE space. One space where you don't have to worry about the pressures and behaviors associated with partying.
I hope people can understand that SubClub isn't a house and we're not throwing parties. It isn't a bar – we don't have paid staff and bouncers to deal with people who've had a few too many. This is a community arts space, one that is specifically open to underage people and people looking for a safe place. We respectfully ask that if you don't feel you can spend a couple of hours with us without imbibing then please attend shows at another venue and let this space exist for people seeking an alternative.

lpoutine,
Jackerbie has just posted a new topic entitled "January Gin Joint & Eatery | Victoria | 1802 Government Street" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Applications are in for a gin bar in the "Design District" of downtown Victoria. The permits are filed under the main address, 1802 Government Street, but I assume the business will be located in 1820 Government Street, which has been listed for lease recently.
BP for strip out issued Nov 25
BP for tenant improvements in process
Liquor License application for food primary is in process
Definitely lots of gin being made in the region!

Contrary to popular belief, the hardest part about running a business may not be finding customers, it's getting one started.
Depending on the public policies and application processes of your country, you might struggle or succeed in opening and operating a business.
If you live in New Zealand, for example, you can get a new enterprise up and running in half a day. If you live in Luxembourg or Argentina, however, it's a different story─with the process sometimes taking over a year.
Today's chart uses data from the World Bank's annual Doing Business 2020 (https://openknowledge.worldbank.org/bitstream/handle/10986/32436/9781464814402.pdf?sequence=24&isAllowed=y) report, which delves into the ease of doing business in countries around the world.

Yes, it's a real thing, and it's available now in stores.
I picked up a copy of the millennial edition and I must say it was pretty funny, although it played a little differently than the original game. If anyone picks up the Langford version let us know what it's like. You can find the game at Walmart and I'm sure other retailers.

Its been empty for awhile and the site isn't looking great. I heard something about some renovations being done on it when I talked to folks at the city, but I have not been able to find any details. Is the railyards developer going to be buying for condos or turning it into stores?

Victoria Watcher posted topic The Humboldt Valley ping pong table
lpoutine,
Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "The Humboldt Valley ping pong table" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pricey ping pong table paddles taxpayers Questions raised about $6,071.99 plus expenditure
While safety upgrades to the corner of Douglas Street and Humboldt are very welcome, it's questionable whether a $6,071.99 ping pong table in the mini plaza will be a hit with City of Victoria taxpayers. The top-of-the-line Cornilleau table is made in France of "high-strength materials, and displays robustness against shocks, weather, and vandalism." According to www.pingpongdepot.com, (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001J-yBauiXSHrWdQ_grPvIik3Jz8mxgrWGystVf886pm8X4UZfq9nk_bBTqeICrWOLilbSv2cyO5Xzp4He4mobhdvM5XL36gMg4KDynYm7-TXZutqF4NX8NkPgz2zNpF7zRk-G--vI2zzcK3DoDvRW3uoeJwgtYh-2uQ5-LftqmNd7k4GADqIaEg==&c=GRN6EvfzyJz5t1ga_E8vrzKd_zLXq_t55X7kK-7rmW-NfQaVqRgaNQ==&ch=DpJ3BbRrgIkXZhw354bwPiVkvxL8xfhbJt2Gx9KfA6dVBOQqTa4N8Q==) it offers the best playing quality on the market in this category and sells for a princely $6,071.99. "Most taxpayers think any City financial contribution would be better spent fixing resurfacing roads or funding the police department," says Stan Bartlett, chair of Grump
y Taxpayer$ of Greater Victoria. "For others, it's symptomatic of a council that has lost its way and when money is no object this is what you get." The most expensive ping pong table on Vancouver Island raises nothing but questions about the actual total cost and the value of this feature, says Bartlett. "How is ping pong and a featherweight, 0.095 ounce ball compatible and practical with what is often a windy Humboldt Valley?" According to Weather Spark (http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001J-yBauiXSHrWdQ_grPvIik3Jz8mxgrWGystVf886pm8X4UZfq9nk_bBTqeICrWOLBqcX5SmY8M1xiKV4WDBctbHBng0RFJRrg3RICMRV3pNtmugbV1AQnRKoOaQC8Yo0qWvGz5gPgxg5e9ruqDTm9EI0dzl0PmybY_i1zf5ctZ2i2tsj2uFQmfUtmd3BqFwEG-LugR68g2VBidEeU1-5W_h7x2C6-I3FOVP--KFh4SNSpfb7n6WCIg==&c=GRN6EvfzyJz5t1ga_E8vrzKd_zLXq_t55X7kK-7rmW-NfQaVqRgaNQ==&ch=DpJ3BbRrgIkXZhw354bwPiVkvxL8xfhbJt2Gx9KfA6dVBOQqTa4N8Q==) the average annual wind speed is abut 10 km-p-h in Victoria further impacted by the effects of a wind tunnel in the Humboldt Valley. Th
en there's the wet season - when there's some rain - which lasts more than six months, according to Weather Spark. "Does the $6,071.99 cost include taxes, shipping and installation? Were the immediate neighbourhood residents consulted about the ping pong table? How does Bart's Pub and patrons of the adjacent outdoor patio feel about the table? Will flying ping pong balls conflict with cyclists and pedestrians in the area? Should the City be in the business of handing out free paddles and balls?" "One of the last goofy uses of public money - partly funded by the City of Victoria taxpayer - was a bicycle contraption on Cook Street that allows you to charge your phone. When is the last time you saw anyone actually use it?"

lpoutine,
laconic has just posted a new topic entitled "Nowhere * a Restaurant | #G4 1001 DOUGLAS ST" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've searched the forums and am surprised this isn't on the list, but now the secret is out. They've made the long list for Air Canada's 2019 Top New Restaurants.

Nowhere is from the Hanks crew.
We stopped in the for the tasting menu. It one of those small unexpected places that consistently exceeds expectations for taste, presentation, local food and creativity.

FogPub posted topic Refuge Tap House
lpoutine,
FogPub has just posted a new topic entitled "Refuge Tap House" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Every other pub has its own thread, this one might as well too. :)
Was in there tonight for the first time. Obvious growing pains still - was there with some other people and trying to sort out the bills was all kinds of fun. But the general idea - a small watering hole in a space that likely wasn't going to be used for much else - is great: there should be one on every corner.
Worth noting that for a place calling itself a tap house they don't have a huge beer selection - maybe about 20 - but the good thing is they sell those beers in glass sizes ranging from 6 oz on up, so you can get just a small beer if that's all you want (contrast with various places where the smallest you can get is a 12 or 14 oz sleeve).
Prices about what you'd expect for the downtown core area.

VIResident posted topic Municipal, Provincial & Federal Taxes combined total
lpoutine,
VIResident has just posted a new topic entitled "Municipal, Provincial & Federal Taxes combined total" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Could not find a topic that spoke to all three levels of taxes combined and impact on the average Jane & Joe.
A snip from today's news:
When provincial taxes are added to those imposed by Ottawa, top marginal tax rates exceed 50 per cent in most of the country. The aggregate income tax burden is now excessive for skilled workers, managers, professionals, innovators, top researchers and entrepreneurs. These are the people we need to drive entrepreneurial wealth creation and sustain a productive and competitive economy. Many talented individuals with these kinds of qualifications and experience are leaving Canada or seriously contemplating doing so.

Inquiring minds wonder what that percentage is when adding in municipal taxes AND levies.60%? more? Alberta has floated the idea of dropping corp./business tax to 8%, very appealing to any business of any size.Alberta is also floating the idea of dropping personal tax rate substantially.Think that is enough to entice people to scramble over the provincial border, kids and small business in tow?

Citified.ca posted topic [Downtown] 1314-1324 Wharf Street / Northern Junk | Rentals; retail | 6-storeys | Proposed
lpoutine,
Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "[Downtown] 1314-1324 Wharf Street / Northern Junk | Rentals; retail | 6-storeys | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Reliance Properties has dropped its earlier proposal for an eight-storey condominium project at the Northern Junk site and on City lands in favour of a six-storey (five from Wharf Street) rental building solely on the Northern Junk lands. The design has not yet been released.
The discussion on the condominium proposal can be found here.

The eight-storey building depicted in the photo above has been nixed in favour of a shorter and smaller as yet-unreleased design on a significantly smaller development site.
Victoria's trepidation over bridge land sell-off forces Northern Junk proposal to slim down, nix condos in favour of rentals

The City of Victoria's about-face over the sale of excess Johnson Street Bridge lands has forced a decade-long harbourfront development proposal to drastically alter its design and scope, Citified has learned. Sources at the City of Victoria tell Citified that Reliance Properties' plans for Johnson Street Gateway, a mixed-use condominium and retail project that would simultaneously restore the historic Northern Junk buildings at 1314-1324 Wharf Street, have been shelved in favour of a purpose-built rental complex with fewer floors, a significant reduction in residences and zero on-site parking. Since 2010, Vancouver-based Reliance Properties – the firm which restored the historic Janion Hotel and built its oceanfront addition overlooking the northwest corner of the new Johnson Street Bridge – has been pursuing municipal approvals for a mid-rise project that from the outset was expected to absorb excess City-owned land made available through a re-alignment of the bridge's ea
stern approaches. Despite Reliance's plans to spend significant sums of money on the heritage restoration of the Northern Junk buildings and undertake a costly remediation of the City-owned lands in addition to their purchase, sustained critical feedback from City Hall saw Johnson Street Gateway's design change six times between 2011 and 2018, with the seventh revision now making its way through the approvals process. AllseeingEye posted topic My Chosen Cafe
lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "My Chosen Cafe" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Was quite surprised there wasn't already a review of this popular long time Metchosin eatery; we went Sunday to meet friends for brunch. I was a bit leery thinking it would be tough to find parking given its the only food joint for a few clicks in any direction. No matter, although busy, finding a spot was not an issue.
I think I was expecting some rural "farm-type" cafe but couldn't have been more wrong. Its modern, very well laid out - much bigger than I expected - the food delicious (I had the breakfast burrito and fruit cup) and the portions are huge. Mrs ASE had the french toast and never have I seen more or thicker 'toast' on a plate. Like ever. Exiting out the back door is a side business they do strictly making and selling pizza, which I am told is first rate.
On a side note I have to say the latest houses in the Royal Bay development are, um, "unfortunate". My way of saying they're damn ugly. Not to mention they are built practically and literally right down to and overlooking Metchosin Road. Not sure who in their right mind would want to live in them, or especially in that location, but I digress....
The bottom line if you want to go for a bit of a drive in country on a nice Sunday morning, and get utterly stuffed with some great grub once you reach your destination, this is the place.

Just saw a post from Kevin Murdoch reporting that after a very brief illness from cancer that Nils passed away
He reposted from another source

Our community has lost a giant. Our dear friend, Nils Jensen, died this morning after a short battle with cancer. He arrived in Canada from Denmark as an eight year old with nary a word of English in his vocabulary. Canada, and the communities in which he lived, became his life and passion. He was a four term member of Oak Bay Council, serving two terms as its Mayor. While he loved his Oak Bay, Nils forward-thinking vision extended to the entire lower island. His vast reservoir of patience and optimism allowed him to successfully work with many colleagues on critical infrastructure projects as a member and Chair of the Capital Regional District. Raising of the CRD dam to ensure fresh drinking water for future generations was a particular accomplishment.Nils was a learned man, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering, a Law Degree from Osgoode Hall and a Masters of Law from the London School of Economics. He practiced criminal law as defence counsel and as a prosecutor. H
e taught law in Ontario and BC. He worked to make a more effective legal system by helping to bring modern technologies to the courtroom. And there is so much more. He has been a wonderful friend.
He leaves his wife and incredible partner in life Jean and two amazing sons Nicholas and Stewart. A memorial for NIls will be held at 2 pm, Thursday, April 11 at the Oak Bay High School Community Theatre.

Little has changed in Shawnigan Lake Village since this 1981 photo was taken near a service station that still stands on Shawnigan Lake Road at Mill Bay Road. Situated north of Greater Victoria in the Cowichan Valley Regional District, the Shawnigan Lake community's village core will soon be the focus of a visioning process to help direct its future development patterns and public realm improvements.

So tired of getting ripped off when buying fish in Vic. Last weekend we were in Parksville and bought delicious, fresh Halibut at French Creek for half the price we pay in Vic. Anyone know if a good, reasonable Fishmonger or Fish Market in Victoria? < $50/Kg!!!

SamCB posted topic March 31 Spec Tax Deadline
lpoutine,
SamCB has just posted a new topic entitled "March 31 Spec Tax Deadline" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's March 31- 11:40pm. I planned to declare my exemption at the last minute (as a mini protest of the idiocy of how this tax was applied).
I look for the letters that I've been keeping on the microwave for two months, and realize my wife has thrown them out. Probably weeks ago.
Am I screwed? Or is there leniency for late exemptions the first year?
Side note: how the f%^# can an "exemption" apply to 99% of people? An exemption is for the exception, not the rule.... sigh.

Mike K. posted topic Foreign interference/collusion in Canadian elections
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Foreign interference/collusion in Canadian elections" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh my...
------------ QUOTE ----------
This story has all the elements of a fiction novel. Unfortunately it's real. Piece by meticulously researched piece, B.C.-based independent researcher Vivian Krause spent almost 10 years exposing the story. Every detail has been corroborated, including with American and Canadian tax records, together with documents and statements from the perpetrators themselves.
...
What would become a massively disruptive intrusion into Canadian affairs would take years and a large amount of money. Enter the Rockefeller Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. They, along with environmentalist charities, poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the U.S.-based Tides Foundation, a murky organization that provides cover as a legal laundering service that can funnel donations into activist groups, without revealing the source.
...
But the American anti-oilsands funding effort didn't stop at encouraging opposition to oil pipelines. The Victoria-based Dogwood Initiative received millions of dollars from Tides Canada to run get-out-the-vote campaigns in the 2017 B.C. provincial election, including deploying a throng of campaign workers in the riding of Green Party Leader Andrew Weaver. After his election, the B.C. government would be in the hands of an NDP/Green alliance bent on fighting the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.
Money was also funnelled to campaign activists working to help the Liberals win the 2015 election. Vancouver-based Leadnow received directly and through the B.C.-based Sisu Institute more than $1 million from Tides Canada towards the objective of defeating then prime minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government, which supported expanding the oil and gas industry. Leadnow claims its campaigners helped defeat Conservative candidates in 25 ridings.
