lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Barb's Fish & Chips" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Purely as an aside I was quite surprised that there apparently isn't an existing thread on this well known eatery, at least one I could find easily; at any rate went down last week during the nice weather for the first time since it was sold a few years back. In a nutshell what a huge disappointment: the prices were actually ok - $23.50 for 2 (large) pieces of halibut/fries is not bad as anywhere in this town its north of $20. But "wow" the quality of the fish was just awful - "mushy" would be the most apt description. "Tasteless" would be a close second.
I always enjoyed my previous visits to Barb's (when it was actually owned by "Barb"), but it will be a long, long time before I/we patronize this establishment again. I can think of at least a half dozen "fish and chips" joints in town that serve up an infinitely superior product. Terrible let down.

The 107-year-old Wellburns Market building at 1050-1058 Pandora Avenue is the focus of development plans that could see the heritage complex restored and modern residences built on adjacent lands currently used as a surface parking lot.

The North Park neighbourhood's Wellburns Market building and its adjacent surface parking lot have been tentatively purchased by a Vancouver-based real-estate development firm with plans to develop the property, Citified has learned. The iconic two-storey heritage registered complex, situated at 1050-1058 Pandora Avenue, was constructed in 1911 as a mixed-use commercial and residential building that 107-years on remains true to its original purpose with a Wellburns Market as the primary ground floor commercial tenant, and a barber shop with frontage onto Cook Street and rental apartments above. Redevelopment plans for the Wellburns properties are likely to incorporate a heritage restoration of the original building while a woodframed residential lowrise is anticipated on lands currently occupied by the parking lot. rsnxmt posted topic How to build more awareness on the need for Abundant Housing in Victoria outside of VV?
lpoutine,
rsnxmt has just posted a new topic entitled "How to build more awareness on the need for Abundant Housing in Victoria outside of VV?" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I realize that VV has a YIMBY element to it, but the forum nature, broad scope, and longevity of VV make it somewhat inaccessible. It is a challenge to find information and there's just a ton of history to read through.
I currently live downtown with my wife and toddler son. I think there are more people like me who are under a lot of strain to find a life for their family in Victoria but are squeezed in 1 or 2 bedroom condos but left with limited options given the lack of supply and soaring home prices. It's great to see so many towers going up in the downtown area, but almost none of the units are greater in size/rooms than what we have. It seems an impossible jump to find something greater than 2 bedrooms - since it seems 3 bedroom units/rowhouses/townhouses aren't that common perhaps there's also a problem of "missing middle". (http://missingmiddlehousing.com/)
Given the election this fall, I could see value in a YIMBY group resource that provides some indicator about which Victoria councilors are more progressive and which are not for promoting abundant housing - especially for those who just don't have time to dig into it if this is an issue that is important to them. Nevertheless, I'm sure a lot more information could be provided in a clear format like abundant housing vancouver (http://www.abundanthousingvancouver.com/) to help bring visibility to this specific issue. There's lots of other nuanced topics such as the bizarre community zoning brought up on Sidewalking Victoria (https://www.sidewalkingvictoria.com/blog//2017/05/update-victorias-bizarre-neighbourhood.html).
I can't imagine doing this by myself. Does this kind of message make sense? Is anyone interested in contributing to this? Is there value in making this effort to reach those who aren't in the VV community?

This a "fusion" restaurant. The waitress described it as flavors from all sides of the Pacific.
We had a tacone each, one adobo chicken and the tuna tikka taki. We also shared the achiote-pinapple pork adobowl.
There were no desserts on the menu, but we asked an tried an ice cream with mango, cardamom and chilis.
We both agreed that all the dishes were very flavorful and well presented. Even as people who have tried quite a few different types of food, each dish had a interesting taste that we had not often encountered before. This is an easy recommendation for friends.
The service was very good. The waitress was happy to explain the concept and all the items.
Special shout out to Tod Creek Cider's Mala-hop cider. The hops gave the cider an interesting taste. The non beer drinker who ordered it liked it enough to consider it as a regular contender while the non IPA beer sipper enjoyed it too.

Vancouver's Flying Pig chain of restaurants will be expanding to Vancouver Island later this year with a location at Yates and Wharf streets in downtown Victoria, Citified has learned. Highly regarded on the lower Mainland for its brunch fare and relaxed dining atmospheres, Flying Pig's trio of vintage-inspired locations are situated in downtown Vancouver's Yaletown and Gastown districts and in the former Olympic Village neighbourhood south of the downtown core. "Our backgrounds are influenced by a strong Canadian work ethic and our roots are planted in kitchens all around Vancouver. We refer to our restaurant[s] as a 'nouveau Canadian Bistro,' reads a statement on company's website. Here's something about the Fire Feast in Carcross. How would something like this go over here:
------------ QUOTE ----------
On a perfect day in Carcross, YT, Indigenous chefs are busy by the grills cooking up fare for the Fire Feast that probably won't be found on southern grills.
The menu includes;
Smelts wrapped in kelp.
Salted bison roast.
And seal loin marinated in mint.
"It's really nice it brings you back to your roots and the humble beginnings," said Chef Joseph Shawanda.
The three chefs at this Fire Feast were hand-picked by Eric Patman of Edible Canada.
His company runs tours around the world that showcase Canadian cuisine.
"Local, sustainable & seasonal ingredients in the hands of many cultures and Canada being a melting pot there's hundreds and hundreds of cultures but the reality the founding culture is the Indigenous peoples," said Patman.
The idea behind the Fire Feast is to showcase Indigenous cuisine.
Local culinary students are pulled in to help prepare the food.

lpoutine,
Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "[Burnside-Gorge] 2300 Douglas Street (Silver Arrow Cars) | Rentals, office, auto dealership | 6-storeys | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
An artist's rendering of 2300 Douglas Street, a six-storey, mixed-use purpose-built rental building with a ground floor Silver Arrow Cars luxury automobile dealership with a single floor of offices above. The project may also include a 10% affordable housing component through a partnership with Pacifica Housing.

Victoria-based Laing Properties and luxury auto dealer Silver Arrow Cars have unveiled plans to build a six-storey mixed-use commercial and residential building on the northern fringe of downtown Victoria, Citified has learned. Developer Ian Laing's concept – situated along the 2300-block of Douglas Street between Queens Avenue and a Dairy Queen restaurant – would include Silver Arrow Cars' showroom at grade level, offices on the second level and four floors of rental housing. Located just a stone's throw from downtown Victoria's highrise residences and office towers, the development site is in the City's Burnside-Gorge neighbourhood with planning guidelines that prioritize industrial uses along the west side of the Douglas Street corridor. However, the possibility of a landmark project materializing in an otherwise industrial, nondescript precinct of the city centre has the local community association nodding in approval. "Based on the feedback we've received follo
wing our initial consultation meetings, the community association is actually quite excited," Laing says. "They like it, and given that the building would be in an area that they feel could use revitalization and help build the community by having more pedestrians on the street, they would like to see it proceed." Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "[Burnside-Gorge] 2300 Douglas Street (Silver Arrow Cars) | Rentals, office, auto dealership | 6-storeys | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".

"They like it, and given that the building would be in an area that they feel could use revitalization and help build the community by having more pedestrians on the street, they would like to see it proceed." VicHockeyFan posted topic Capital Iron lands

VicHockeyFan has just posted a new topic entitled "Capital Iron lands" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/capital-iron-building-part-of-7-acre-parcel-going-on-the-market-1.23262693
------------ QUOTE ----------
A nearly seven-acre assembly of land that includes the historic Capital Iron building, running from the foreshore of Victoria's Upper Harbour east to Government Street, is going on the market for an unspecified price.
-----------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
Mike Black, Ronald Greene's son-in-law, is now sole owner of the Capital Iron business, which is a tenant in a building at 1900 Store St. Capital Iron also has stores in Sidney and Langford.
....
"Capital Iron has control of its leases for all three stores for the foreseeable future," Black said.
-----------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
Family spokesman and consultant David Ganong, managing director of Colliers International on Vancouver Island, said, "This is probably one of the best sites remaining in the city of Victoria. Where else do you find seven acres?"
Developers have approached the family in the past, he said.
He anticipates that given the size and scope of the lands, that Lower Mainland developers will be interested, noting that other major development properties have been purchased recently by Vancouver companies.
-----------------------------
While all the lease terms are intact, it does not sound like a long-term thing.

lpoutine,
Kapten Kapsell has just posted a new topic entitled "[Harris Green] 1010 Fort Street | Mixed-use | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
NVision Properties is proposing to build a 6-storey rental building at 1010 Fort Street with 62 rental units and (I assume) street-level retail. This is planned for the former Da Tandoor property (it was a sales centre for Black and White most recently); in order to accommodate the unit count and height, I assume that the J and J wonton Building has been bought by the developer too and will be included in the proposal. Mike Miller is proposing that ten of the rentals here will be affordable units in order to secure approval for Bellwood Park down the road in Rockland.

lpoutine,
Kapten Kapsell has just posted a new topic entitled "Burnside-Gorge] 2300 Douglas Street | Retail, Office, and Residential | 6-storeys | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Silver City Cars is proposing to redevelop the U-Haul Property at 2300 Douglas Street. The first floor would be dedicated to an exotic automobile dealership and the second floor would comprise offices for the firm. Floors 3-6 would comprise a 4-storey 'tower' portion dedicated to residential use and set back from the lower levels; I presume this would be rental (rather than condo).
This proposal isn't yet on Dev Tracker, but there will be a neighbourhood meeting to examine the proposal on Monday April 30 at Burnside Gorge Community Centre (starting at 6:30).

Mike K. posted topic AlertReady emergency warning system
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "AlertReady emergency warning system" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This Friday, April 6th the AlertReady emergency response system will be rolled out and accessible to all individuals with a cellphone connected to a wireless provider. Individuals cannot opt out of such warnings and everyone in a specific area will receive the warning.
The move comes after a somewhat sporadic emergency response and public alert to a tsunami warning that recently affected coastal British Columbia and Vancouver Island. There were accounts of individuals who signed up for emergency alerts with their municipalities not receiving any such alerts, while others did. Some municipalities did not send out alerts while others were more prepared/proactive and notified all residents who registered via their emergency notification systems of a materializing tsunami threat.

AllseeingEye posted topic Fireside Grill
lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Fireside Grill" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Although my preference was to take the family to the OB Marina for Easter brunch, Mrs ASE prevailed this year so we went with the Fireside Grill. Big mistake. I hadn't been there in nearly eight years and it'l likely be that long if not longer until the next visit.
Although the server was excellent - a very pleasant guy who worked his tail off - for the price of $35/head his work ethic was unfortunately not enough to salvage the uneven fare at the buffet. The eggs benny were by common agreement the worst any of us have ever experienced in the city, anywhere. The eggs were way underdone - fine if you like them so runny they attempt to slide off your plate and scurry back to their com-padres at the buffet table but not so appetizing to those of us who generally prefer cooked food - and the English muffins were actually so dry everyone at one point remarked "I can't cut my benny!" When tackling a benny with fork and especially knife it should never require all of my 275 pounds to cut a portion off the friggin' thing....
The bacon had the consistency of rubber - hello! some people actually like crispy bacon folks - and the turkey was really dry. And tough. Conversely the Cesar salad was tasty, as were the bam bam red Thai chili infused prawns. Overall though for nearly $200 factoring in tip, the experience was less than a stellar one unfortunately. It think we'll default back to the OBM next time out....

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Fireside Grill" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
