lpoutine,
VIResident has just posted a new topic entitled "City of Victoria BC - Reconciliation" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This new topic is all things reconciliation in the City of Victoria
Perhaps the City of Victoria Reconciliation efforts needs its own thread?
Perhaps we can all contribute to help reconciliation by being frank about what the City is undertaking, or suggestions to that end.
Snippets from today's news (Dec. 30/18) Times Colonist
"A Victoria city committee — called the city family and made up of Indigenous and non-Indigenous members — was appointed in June 2017 to address reconciliation efforts."
"I know the original action was unsettling and it should be," Helps said. "Reconciliation isn't easy — if it feels easy, it's not reconciliation. "So there will probably be some more unsettling conversations and unsettling moments along the way over these next four years."
"The whole city is their territory, so that will be an interesting conversation."
"Indigenous people for centuries have stewarded natural areas," she said.
"We have a parks department and they are currently in charge and maybe we need to look at what co-governance of natural areas of the city would look like."She is hopeful there will be a different kind of dialogue and tone in the new year around reconciliation and the moving of Macdonald's statue.
"Interestingly, the majority of the Indigenous members of the city family strongly feel the statue should go somewhere — the where to be determined."

laconic posted topic Laurel Point Park remediation
lpoutine,
laconic has just posted a new topic entitled "Laurel Point Park remediation" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They're very busy doing the remediation. All the trees were cleared a few weeks ago. Piles were driven to hold two barges in place. One barge is pinned between piles and anchored to the shore. A second barge abuts the anchored one. Trucks dump soil at the end of the anchored barge. An excavator transfers the soil to the middle of the movable barge. A front end loader on the barge distributes the soil out toward either end.
A crane and barge have been positioned at the east side of the site. It isn't clear to me if it will be used in a similar setup as the west side of the site.

A high-profile city block enveloped by the busy thoroughfares of Yates, Cook and Johnson streets is poised for redevelopment into a mixed-use residential and commercial node, Citified has learned. Vancouver-based Chard Development has unveiled plans to transform several parcels surrounding the Victoria Professional Building at 1120 Yates Street into a condominium tower at the corner of Cook and Yates streets, an affordable condominium along Cook Street, and a rental complex fronting onto Johnson Street. The aged mixed-use office and retail building will undergo an interior and exterior modernization along with a comprehensive expansion of its on-site parking via a multi-storey underground parkade accessible to commercial tenants, their clients and future occupants of the three residences. Mike K. posted topic Murray Rankin, MP for Victoria, is expected to announce his retirement
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Murray Rankin, MP for Victoria, is expected to announce his retirement" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Murray Rankin is set to announce his retirement in the coming weeks, according to individuals familiar with his plans.
Rankin was elected to the Victoria federal riding in the fall of 2012 and assumed office on November 26. He will have served as a Member of Parliament for six years by month's end.
The next federal election is on October 21, 2019.
Suspicions are that City of Victoria councillor Ben Isitt will pursue Rankin's position and for a time it was suspected City of Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps would seek the seat under the Green or Liberal banners (hence her indecision late last year over whether or not she would run in the 2018 City of Victoria election). Her decision to pursue another term as Mayor of Victoria, and having been re-elected, is largely viewed as confirmation that she will not run in a federal by-election (should Rankin step down) or in the 2019 federal election.
MP's must serve six years in order to qualify for a full pension.

Mike K. posted topic 2018 Sooke municipal election
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "2018 Sooke municipal election" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maja Tait, the first-term mayor of Sooke and a former councillor, is being challenged by councillor Kevin Pearson.
Tait's mayoralty was contentious in that she left for maternity leave just one year following the November 2014 municipal elections. She returned on April 1st of 2016. During her absence councillor Rick Kasper took over her role as a CRD director. Although the role was to be an interim position, upon Tait's return there was some drama as Kasper wasn't all too happy to relinquish the position after Tait's absence. Even the mayor's husband got involved and there was a dispute between him and Kasper. Police investigated but closed the case.
Several Sooke councillors are also not seeking re-election for another term.

Victoria-based Cox Developments has submitted a proposal to the City of Victoria with plans to build one of the most architecturally unique residential towers in the Capital Region, Citified has learned. The angled 15-storey design (https://victoria.citified.ca/rentals/1400-vancouver-street/), leaning to the east from its location on land formerly occupied by the McCall Brothers Funeral Home along the 900-block of Johnson Street at 1400 Vancouver Street, will be an architectural first for Victoria where a building as prominent as the 50-metre tall highrise will literally hover over its foundation and an adjacent 1960's-era funeral chapel designed by famed Victoria architect John Di Castri. "We like to push architectural norms with our projects, and we wanted to do something very different and very unique on this site," said developer Dan Cox. "The building design stemmed from a desire to see the chapel retained and repurposed, given the role it has served in our community, and the
importance of this building to Victoria's architectural heritage." [Full article]

Mystic-Pizza posted topic Victoria School District Board Of Education Elections
lpoutine,
Mystic-Pizza has just posted a new topic entitled "Victoria School District Board Of Education Elections" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
While most of us focus on Mayoral and Council candidates during our municipal elections, very little is said about our School Board elections that take place at the same time. When you go to vote for Mayor and Council, you also have to vote for the school board elections of whichever school district you reside in. This is a very important part of municipal elections as it determines who will be running and operating your public school system, which effects our children, and grandchildren. I advise to all readers to go to your local school district site and find the link to your current board members and to the current individuals running in the election, and look into each candidate. For current board members it's important to give good thought into how they have performed in their term(s) as members of the school board, and weather you think they should continue or if if new candidates should be elected.
If you live in Greater Victoria you reside in Victoria school district 61, which covers the municipalities of Victoria, Esquimalt, Oak Bay, Parts of View Royal, And All of South Saanich. If you live on the Saanich peninsula North of Elk Lake then you reside in School District #63, and if you live in the The West Shore such as most of View Royal, Colwood, Metchosin, Langford, & Sooke you reside in School District #62.
The Current School Board members for the Victoria School District 61 are:
Edith Loring Kuhanga
Tom Ferris
Elaine Leonard
Diane McNally
Dedra Nohr
Peg Orcherton
Rob Paynter
Jordan Waters
Ann Whiteaker
New Candidates for the Victoria School District 61 School Board are:
Nicole Duncan
Aindan Elkin
Angie Hentze
Vincent Gornall
Ryan Painter
Zul Rajabali
On your voting Ballot you van vote for none, or up to a maximum of 9 candidates for The School Board elections.

------------ QUOTE ----------
A plan to restore a prominent heritage corner in downtown Victoria has won the support of city councillors.
Councillors authorized a heritage alteration permit for restoration of the two-storey facades of the Morgan Block, built in 1891, and the Watson & McGregor Building, built in 1909, and to add two storeys for 30 condominium units above.
Both buildings are at Douglas and Johnson streets.

Merrick Architects, on behalf of 284244 B.C. Ltd. — a trust owned by the Morgan family — say key elements of the restoration include:
• reinstatement of the original raised parapet on the Douglas Street facade
• stripping away paint to expose the original brick
• re-introduction of historically sensitive commercial storefronts
• restoration of wood windows
• reinstatement of an original sheet metal upper cornice on the Johnson Street facade
A city staff report says both buildings are representative of the heritage character and architectural composition characteristic of Victoria's Old Town district.
City staff say the 1891 Morgan Block "provides visual continuity" along a historic street that contains an entire block of heritage buildings.
The 1909 Watson and McGregor Building is described as "a two-storey brick Classical Revival-Influenced commercial building" that has seen "numerous interventions over its lifespan."

Both buildings are at Douglas and Johnson streets.

citiesforeveryone posted topic Municipal Candidates’ Affordability Ratings
lpoutine,
citiesforeveryone has just posted a new topic entitled "Municipal Candidates' Affordability Ratings" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Affordability is an important issue in the 2018 municipal election. Many voters want guidance to identify candidates who will reflect their values when making decisions that affect affordability.
To help voters evaluate candidates' positions, Cities for Everyone surveyed mayoral and city council candidates in Victoria, Saanich and Oak Bay. Of 93 candidates contacted we received 31 completed surveys. We also analyzed candidates' websites and interviews, incumbents' voting records and the quality of their campaign.
This analysis found that candidates tend to fall into four general categories:
1. Comprehensive affordability. Supports policies that allow more compact infill in residential neighborhoods to increase low- and moderate-income affordability.
2. Low-income affordability. Focuses on subsidizing and mandating below-market housing to increase affordability for people with low incomes and special housing needs.
3. "Protect neighborhoods." Opposes neighborhood change and therefore affordable infill.
4. Unconcerned or unclear. Provides little information about their position on affordability.
The distinction between Comprehensive and Low-income affordability is important because there are often trade-offs between these goals. Some policies intended to increase low-income affordability can reduce middle-income affordability, for example, if inclusionary zoning increases moderate-priced housing costs, or housing demolition prohibitions prevent development of larger buildings. Comprehensive affordability advocates support more development of both low- and moderate priced housing in walkable urban neighborhoods.
The table below summarizes the results. It indicates which candidates tend to reflect various affordability priorities. This can help voters choose the candidates who will best represent their priorities.

Both citizens and candidates vary in their affordability priorities. Some favor policies targeted at reducing homelessness and increasing housing for the lowest income households; others want to increase affordable housing and transportation options for both low- and middle-income households; and some are more concerned about preserving single-family housing in residential neighborhoods and so oppose policies that allow more affordable infill. Our Candidates' Affordability Rating allows voters to identify the candidates who best reflect their values.

Philostone posted topic Help me find a nice building in the right area?
lpoutine,
Philostone has just posted a new topic entitled "Help me find a nice building in the right area?" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Greetings All,
I am new to this forum, and and I have been thinking of relocating from Ottawa, Ontario to Victoria, BC. I have visited once, and loved my stay here, but I have been considering finding work , and living in Victoria, BC as a permanent resident.
I am interested to know how the job market is in Victoria, BC, as well as the cost of living such as food expense, 1 bed room apartment (etc).
I would appreciate any feed back from other forum members who live in this beautiful part of Canada. My goal is to get settled here by October 2011.

DavidL posted topic The importance of a candidate's place of residence?
lpoutine,
DavidL has just posted a new topic entitled "The importance of a candidate's place of residence?" in forum "Victoria Politics".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd like to get a sense of whether it is a significant detriment to a candidate in a municipal election to run for office in a municipality in which they do not reside. Saanich resident running for Victoria, Victoria resident running for Esquimalt etc. Does it matter if it's for Council or Mayor. My own feeling is that council less important, Mayor probably more important.

Bingo posted topic Tent Town Two
lpoutine,
Bingo has just posted a new topic entitled "Tent Town Two" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I decided to check this site out as It seems to be still in the early stages of development. It is a lovely spot set among the fir trees and a scenic weeping willow.
The Trans Canada Highway is right next door so traveller's from across the country should be able to find a campsite. Another plus is the nearby Galloping Goose Trail over the highway to connect you with all the amenities that UpTown has to offer. There is a bike shop just the highway should you need some spare parts. And should you require the services of the Fire Department, that too is also situated nearby. Here are a few photos of the peaceful setting.

A luxury mixed-use condominium and retail project has been proposed for a long-vacant lot overlooking the View and Vancouver streets intersection, Citified has learned. Dubbed The Ventana and rising to 14-storeys, the oval-shaped highrise designed by architect Jan Zak will be comprised of 21 residences sized at approximately 1,500 square feet, while two retail units will front onto the street below. A rarity among Victoria's condominium offerings, developer Don Charity of Mosaic Properties confirms purchasers will have the opportunity to combine two suites at Ventana to occupy an entire floor of the tower. Amenities for residents are currently envisioned to include a lap pool and a fitness facility on the third floor, while two high-speed elevators will yield near-instant elevator access on all levels. Kapten Kapsell posted topic Cook and Yates Development (Chard)
lpoutine,
Kapten Kapsell has just posted a new topic entitled "Cook and Yates Development (Chard)" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought it makes sense to start a thread for the Chard development that will be coming to the corner of Cook and Yates as well as the lot behind the 1120 Yates (medical building) at some point.
Apparently the owners of Laundro Lounge (one of the tenants in the small existing strip mall that includes Ithaka Greek Restaurant) are already seeking a new space per recent staff comments. I suppose it's possible that these businesses are on a month-to-month lease pending the redevelopment.

Apparently the owners of Laundro Lounge (one of the tenants in the small existing strip mall that includes Ithaka Greek Restaurant) are already seeking a new space per recent staff comments. I suppose it's possible that these businesses are on a month-to-month lease pending the redevelopment.

Bob Fugger posted topic Axe & Grind - 910 Government Street
lpoutine,
Bob Fugger has just posted a new topic entitled "Axe & Grind - 910 Government Street" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not really sure where else to post this, but a coworker of mine discovered a sign for an "urban axe throwing club" on Broughton Street, across from Nautical Nellies. Which, it goes without saying, seemed a bit odd. And then this morning on the front of 910 Government Street, on the stairs down to the regal confines of the Burger King, underneath the Horror Escape Room sign was a sign for "Axe & Grind" (axeandgrind.org). Their website reveals the following:
"We are Victoria's best (and only) urban axe throwing range! We're bringing this quintessentially Canadian backyard sport indoors so you can experience something new with friends. Before each session, our experienced staff will teach you how to throw axe in a safe and fun environment, paving the way for a bit of competition amongst friends. Once you hear the satisfying thud of an axe into wood, you'll be hooked. An unforgettable way to spend a birthday (birthday boy/girl play free!), corporate party, bachelor or bachelorette or any special occasion.
It's like darts, but with an axe."
It goes on to state that they are officially licensed by WATL, the World Axe Throwing League.
Opens tomorrow. Not sure how smart it is to open such a club in the same building as the ICBC Driver Licensing Office.

silentfoto posted topic Is There a Method to City Planner Madness?
lpoutine,
silentfoto has just posted a new topic entitled "Is There a Method to City Planner Madness?" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Having lived in big cities it's painfully obvious Victoria in current boom is 30 years behind the curve on infrastructure.
A horse and buggy town one taxi driver told me.
With boom only in it's infancy Vic needs a couple of freeways the way it is moving or crawling. Easier said than done I know but, as a city bus riding denizen of Vic, getting through downtown is a form of torture.
Curious if any of the city planners take public transportation to work.
Way it's going we will end up walking as a quicker alternative too the laboured bus service from our Air BNB residences because their ain't no apartment on the rental market.
Ive witnessed it before living in Berkeley in the dot com years.
Go to see an apartment only to find into 20 other couples waiting outside in line.
Plus, can your average service sector worker afford a $1300 one bed?

Mike K. posted topic Rental housing Q&A
lpoutine,
Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Rental housing Q&A" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We'll be starting a monthly Q&A component on Citified with professionals related to the commercial real-estate market, business related to real-estate and industry input on local issues or themes.
The first one will be a segment with Devon Properties, which is Victoria's largest rental housing management firm. The questions/answers will apply to industry professionals and consumers alike, and I'd like to open up the question suggestions to you all.
The Q&A segments will be comprised of 10 questions and input on the questions will also be generated through our relationship with CBRE, so unfortunately not all questions will be able to make it into the Q&A but we'll select them from those that you provide below.
There's no such thing as a stupid question, please don't hesitate to posit yours.

AllseeingEye posted topic Barb's Fish & Chips
lpoutine,
AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Barb's Fish & Chips" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Purely as an aside I was quite surprised that there apparently isn't an existing thread on this well known eatery, at least one I could find easily; at any rate went down last week during the nice weather for the first time since it was sold a few years back. In a nutshell what a huge disappointment: the prices were actually ok - $23.50 for 2 (large) pieces of halibut/fries is not bad as anywhere in this town its north of $20. But "wow" the quality of the fish was just awful - "mushy" would be the most apt description. "Tasteless" would be a close second.
I always enjoyed my previous visits to Barb's (when it was actually owned by "Barb"), but it will be a long, long time before I/we patronize this establishment again. I can think of at least a half dozen "fish and chips" joints in town that serve up an infinitely superior product. Terrible let down.

Citified.ca posted topic [North Park] Wellburns Market redevelopment | 6-storeys | Proposed
lpoutine,
Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "[North Park] Wellburns Market redevelopment | 6-storeys | Proposed" in forum "City of Victoria".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Citified profile: https://victoria.citified.ca/rentals/wellburns-market-1518-cook-street/ (https://victoria.citified.ca/rentals/wellburns-market-1518-cook-street/)
The 107-year-old Wellburns Market building at 1050-1058 Pandora Avenue is the focus of development plans that could see the heritage complex restored and modern residences built on adjacent lands currently used as a surface parking lot.
Wellburns Market property acquired; dev plans include mid-rise residential complex

The North Park neighbourhood's Wellburns Market building and its adjacent surface parking lot have been tentatively purchased by a Vancouver-based real-estate development firm with plans to develop the property, Citified has learned. The iconic two-storey heritage registered complex, situated at 1050-1058 Pandora Avenue, was constructed in 1911 as a mixed-use commercial and residential building that 107-years on remains true to its original purpose with a Wellburns Market as the primary ground floor commercial tenant, and a barber shop with frontage onto Cook Street and rental apartments above. Redevelopment plans for the Wellburns properties are likely to incorporate a heritage restoration of the original building while a woodframed residential lowrise is anticipated on lands currently occupied by the parking lot.
