lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Glitch Bar and Games Room" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A former Vancouver staple could be making its way to downtown Victoria.

Glitch Bar and Games Room is seeking a new liquor primary licence for 759 Yates St., the former home of Yates Street Taphouse, which closed in May 2023.

The notice of application, posted on the door of the building, proposes a venue with a 275-person capacity and licensed hours from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m., daily.
The location has been empty for more than two years, leaving a prime downtown spot open for a new business.

Victoria city council is now inviting written feedback from property owners and occupants in the area, with comments being accepted until Sept. 29, 2025.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Free little libraries

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Free little libraries" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Greater Victoria Placemaking Network (GVPN) invites people from across the region to celebrate the charm of little free libraries (LFL) by sharing their favourite real-life stories about them.
The call for stories is part of the lead-up to the network's 1,000 Little Free Library Festival, a free community event happening Saturday, Sept. 20, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Oaklands Community Centre (2827 Belmont Ave.).
Little free libraries are little book boxes that operate on the principle of "leave a book, take a book." LFLs come in all shapes and sizes and can be found throughout the region. While most share books, there is a growing number of LFLs that share plants, seeds, toys, yarn, household items, board games, puzzles, art supplies, art, food and more.
Since 2017, the GVPN has been running the Pocket Places Project, which maps, promotes, stocks and helps build LFLs across the Capital Regional District (CRD).
To date, the project has delivered more than 128,000 books to LFLs across the CRD, mapped out more than 1,000 LFLs and helped set up more than 135 LFLs.
"Whenever I talk to someone about little free libraries, they always have a story to share," said Teale Phelps Bondaroff, volunteer lead of the project, in a release.

Spinnakers Expands Let's Talk Program – and

Let's Talk Health Society Pushes for More Public Conversation Spaces

Lower crime, boost health, fight loneliness—one conversation at a time.

Victoria, BC – August 22 – After a lively and successful summer run in July and August, Spinnakers is making its Let's Talk program a permanent feature. The original pilot, held on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. throughout the summer, gave guests a simple and welcoming way to share a table and conversation with someone they had never met before.

Now, anyone can take part by picking up a Let's Talk card at the hostess desk. The hostess will seat you with the next person who has also opted in, ensuring your conversation partner is inviting and ready to connect.

"Times have changed and you can't just walk up to someone and say, 'Hey, do you want to be my friend?'" said Spinnakers owner, Paul Hadfield. "But this structure makes it natural and easy—because you know the other person is also there to welcome you. This is a great way for people to come and enjoy the pub and potentially meet a few new friends. After all, that is the essence of what a pub is all about."

Media Invitation: Join Us at Spinnakers

Members of the press are warmly invited to experience the program firsthand:

Victoria Watcher posted topic Fish and Chips places

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Fish and Chips places" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
VIDEO: Best of the City trawls Victoria in search of the best fish & chipsPair of reporters visits six Greater Victoria restaurants in search of the best battered bites https://www.vicnews.com/local-news/video-best-of-the-city-trawls-victoria-in-search-of-the-best-fish-chips-8128737 (https://www.vicnews.com/local-news/video-best-of-the-city-trawls-victoria-in-search-of-the-best-fish-chips-8128737) They declared Sindy's Fish O Chips the winner.

Fish O Chips - Sidney (10153 Resthaven Dr.)
The first spot did not disappoint. The service was great and fast, and the portion arguably had the biggest piece of fish in this review gauntlet.
Speaking of which, the fish was just the right thickness, was light, well-cooked, firm, and incredibly flaky.
The batter was perfectly crispy and golden brown, with beautiful crunchy bits. Although it lacked a bit of saltiness – after all, it's always better to be under-salted than over-salted – it made up for it in flavour and texture. The chips, according to Ben, were the closest to the "real" thing. Thicker than your original french fries, the outside was golden brown, and the inside was soft and fulsome. However, the chips at the bottom of the dish became a bit too soggy for our liking – perhaps because of the steam generated by the dish's heat.
This British classic was served with a good portion of coleslaw and a small portion of tartar sauce. Although the portion was on the small side, the tartar sauce was full-bodied, sweet, tangy and well balanced.
The price for this order was $22, which isn't cheap nor too expensive.
Overall, Fish O Chips starts off as a contender to be reckoned with.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A slight update on the other thread re: 'where to go for breakfast in Victoria'.

We know about the Ogden Pt Cafe but just wondering if anyone can recommend based on personal experience a good reasonably priced breakfast place that accomodates man's best friend, and also has a decent selection of gluten-free items for Mrs Bambam. If I can since we'll be driving I'd like to avoid the dt core due to parking hassles but if you know of such a foodie place that checks all the boxes, is dt, and serves killer food, by all means rsvp. Thanks folks....

Reddit has been inundated with posts about people smelling a diesel oil / asphalt / burnt tar smell at night for several weeks now.

One user surmises they've pinpointed the source to a paving company on store street, producing asphalt for the next days paving.

Anyone in town noticed the same smell? It seems people near quadra/finlayson are smelling it the worst.

amor de cosmos posted topic Esquimalt Prefab 4-plex Built in 2 Weeks

lpoutine,

amor de cosmos has just posted a new topic entitled "Esquimalt Prefab 4-plex Built in 2 Weeks" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty cool:

------------ QUOTE ----------
This proposed four unit townhouse development is in the development phase. It is being proposed by a group made up of three households who have joined together to form a small local company to create a sustainable, built to Passive House Standard, building that will provide the kind of housing they wish existed in the township and that they would be happy to live in themselves. All members of this group proudly call Esquimalt home.
-----------------------------

https://waymarkarchitecture.com/wollaston-townhouses (https://waymarkarchitecture.com/wollaston-townhouses)

Only 499,996 units to go! Anyway a related question I always have with these prefab buildings is whether the components are also manufactured locally and how long that part of the process takes, since I think the 2 weeks only counts the assembly on-site like a big Lego set. I'm pretty sure that's what's is meant in stories that in China, a company built/assembled a 10-story building in 28 hours (https://www.designboom.com/architecture/watch-china-build-10-story-building-in-a-day-06-24-2021/). It occurs to me then, that if a building can be designed for quick assembly, it can also be designed to fit perfectly on a semi trailer, and in 2025 why not have R2-D2 type robots to assist, maybe with instructions for a given design that would fit on a USB drive?

There also seems to be an open house from 4 to 6 today.

Arts groups eye building on Johnson as part of 'arts district'The groups want to buy the $10.5 million five-storey building. The owners are offering to help make it happen In a city where arts space is steadily being lost to redevelopment and with a high square-footage cost anywhere near downtown, a group of Victoria arts organizations has banded together to buck the trend.
A group made up of X-Changes Gallery, the Victoria Arts Council, Vancouver Island School of Art, CineVic and Errant Art Space is in discussions with the owners of 722 Johnson St. to buy the newly renovated building and establish an arts hub they hope will provide affordable space.
The five-storey building has been listed for sale for $10.5 million.
Spokeswoman Heidi Bergstrom of X-Changes Gallery said they have been looking for this kind of situation for a few years, after concluding that by pooling their lease payments, they could cover a mortgage payment.
Together, the groups pay about $300,000 in rent annually.
They say B.C. arts-funding levels simply can't keep up with rising rents — between 2013 and 2023, commercial rents in the province surged by 270%, while operating funding from the B.C. Arts Council increased by only 25%.
The difficulty has been getting enough money together for a down payment and to qualify for financing, while continuing to pay rent.
But they may have found the right building owners in Ian Laing and Tim Quocksister to make that happen.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Gander - Canadian social media platform

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Gander - Canadian social media platform" in forum "Online Media".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A new social-media platform built by Canadians, for Canadians, and operated in Canada, will publicly launch in October with support from some of the most prominent names in the Canadian innovation sector.

Titled Gander Social Inc., the app was created by five Canadian co-founders who grew frustrated with the torrent of trolls, disinformation and divisive content they experienced on other platforms, largely owned by American tech giants.

When Donald Trump was elected president for a second term, co-founder and CEO Ben Waldman said this frustration morphed into fear, as conversations around data sovereignty (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/business/article-changing-us-relationship-has-thrust-canadas-data-sovereignty-into-the/) – ensuring Canadian control over access, usage and storage – became more pervasive.

"What it came down to was the fear that, without firing a shot, we could easily be annexed by Trump issuing an executive order that all of his friends would immediately adhere to and shut down all of the cloud services that we use every day in business and government, and we would just simply be offline," he said.

"And that was a scary moment."

Gander will feature written posts and videos, giving users the choice to tailor their feed to the types of content they most enjoy. Just like the social-media platform Bluesky, Gander is built on AT Protocol, which means it's part of an open, decentralized network and not controlled by a billionaire.

To ensure data sovereignty for Canadian users, Mr. Waldman said Gander is working with Canadian cloud-service provider ThinkOn to build a parallel network of servers entirely in Canada.

Therefore, users will have the option to toggle between having their posts appear on the larger, open network or the Canada-only network. This will also enable Gander on the domestic network to control its own privacy and moderation rules, which will adhere to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Granville Island, one of the most popular tourist attractions in Canada, is facing an uncertain future as most of its buildings and infrastructure reach the end of their usable life. How did Granville Island end up here, and how can it sustain itself over the long term? (re-uploaded with better blurring 😅).

I didn't realize this guy had a show before CBC. His CBC videos are quite good.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Car washes

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Car washes" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Before that, though, the business plans to roll out the welcome mat in a big way. During its first week, it will offer free washes to anyone who stops by, no strings attached beyond a one-time phone number entry, with the company stating that it aims to give away 15,000 free washes.

There's no shortage of car washes in Greater Victoria – but none quite like this.

Set to open on July 1, Speedwash Colwood is bringing what it says is the country's longest express car wash tunnel to the West Shore, marking the Canadian company's first foray onto Vancouver Island.

The fully automated system will be capable of washing up to 250 cars per hour, with each wash taking just three minutes from start to finish.
But the build is more than just big. Backed by a sustainability-first model, the facility will recycle up to 90 per cent of its water use – a critical feature as the Island heads into another dry summer.

"A lot of people don't realize a tunnel like ours actually uses less water than washing your car at home," said Dawson Weich, chief of marketing and technologies.

The site will also feature 20 self-serve vacuum stations, complimentary detailing tools, and eco-friendly soaps that are biodegradable and phosphate-free. Free vacuuming and matte washing will be offered for the first month after opening.

Colwood will be Speedwash's fourth B.C. location, joining sites in Surrey, Langley and Chilliwack. They offer three separate tiers for washes (protect, shine and clean), with their highest tier costing $30 each, or $55 for a monthly membership.

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Mosh the Rock Island MetalFest" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The first-ever Mosh the Rock Island MetalFest is set to take over Sooke's Fred Milne Park for a one-day all-ages event celebrating the loudest and heaviest music Western Canada has to offer.

The event comes courtesy of Royal Savoie, a man of many hats in the Island's metal community, who has spent years booking events, promoting shows and managing bands, much of it through his own company, Royalty Entertainment. Some may be familiar with his work as a radio DJ hosting CFUV 101.9's Thrash Can – others may have seen him delivering the mail at his day job with Canada Post or in the pit at a local show.
