Victoria Watcher posted topic Sidney Museum

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Sidney Museum" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Sidney Museum exhibit looks at queer history on the Peninsula
The display includes records from local publications such as The Review, which was published from 1912 to 1989, and items from the Transgender Archives at the University of Victoria The letter to the Capital Regional District appeared in The Sidney and Saanich Peninsula Review in March 1987.The writer had written to the CRD worried that mosquitoes at Island View Beach could be spreading HIV/AIDS.

She complained that the park was "a meeting place for nudist gays" who would sunbathe naked on the beach, which was in an area that had a long history as a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
She said she had read "reliable reports" that indicated HIV/AIDS could "most likely" be spread by mosquitoes.

At the time, scientists had determined that the disease, which was first observed in gay men, was spread through bodily fluids — including blood. The Canadian Red Cross had responded two years earlier by testing all its blood products for the virus.

The letter, which came a month after flamboyant entertainer Liberace had succumbed to AIDS, is one of a number of archival pieces that make up Reading Between the Lines for Local Queer History, a new exhibit with a focus on LGBTQ history on the Saanich Peninsula, unveiled at the Sidney Museum for Pride Month.

AllseeingEye posted topic Leopolds

lpoutine,

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Leopolds" in forum "Victoria Pubs, Bars and 19+ Venues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Couldn't find a thread dedicated to this excellent establishment so chiming in now; they were actually founded in Regina so we've known about them since arriving in Victoria as my Saskatchewan-born wife has raved about them since then.

Occasionally we've dropped in and always really enjoyed the food although located on lower Yates parking can be a PITA depending when you go. For the last four days my BIL has been visting from Regina. He's a power engineer so i've been his right hand since Thursday installing new indoor and outdoor LV and motion lights, cctv's, new electrical outlets, working on a plumbing issue...you name it.

Beyond that I played tour director and the 4 things he wanted to see and do were hit up Red Fish Blue Fish (done), the RBCM (done - what a terrible disappointment - save your money its not remotely worth it), Beacon Hill and..........Leopold's. We opted for home delivery last night and it was amazing. First the delivery was amazingly quick and that was appreciated (Skip the dishes). I can't say enough about the food - I think Greg inhaled his pulled pork sandwich, I did likewise with the blackened chicken ciabatta sandwich and spicy thai popcorn chicken which maybe the best I've had in Victoria. Everyone else literally ate in silence it was that tasty, the kidlin' had Mac & Cheese which sure looked good! And the house smelled amazing when we were done :). High recommend for these guys. And they won't break your bank account either....

lpoutine,

LJ has just posted a new topic entitled "Legislative Dining Room" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Had lunch today at the "Leg" dining room. Wow, great food, good service, great prices. Highly recommend. We will be going back again.

Reservations pretty much mandatory and a bit of a fuss to go through security to get in, but other than that it was a great experience.

Wandering through the basement basically to get there is quite an experience, especially the washrooms. Plumbing fixtures from Shanks and Company out of Barrhead Scotland, they don't make them like that anymore.

This coming weekend is the Fernwood Art Stroll which you can learn more about here: https://fernwoodartstroll.ca/ (https://fernwoodartstroll.ca/)

Just to be honest about my shilling here, I am in it as one of the artists, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check it out. Wander around two of the nicest neighbourhoods in the city (because it is in Oaklands too.)

Look forward to seeing some of you!

AllseeingEye posted topic Marble Arch - Burnside & Tillicum strip mall

lpoutine,

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Marble Arch - Burnside & Tillicum strip mall" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Until tonight in my experience the only "Marble Arch" I ever frequented was a certain notorious strip bar when I lived in Vancouver. I don't recall what the food was like but I'm pretty sure I wasn't there for their lunch specials...

OTOH much to my amazwement there is another Marble Arch here in town located in that nondescript little Burnside Strip mall located between Burnside and Tillicum.

You know the type of joint, a literal mom and pop shop run by a middle-aged Chinese couple, smells heavenly, its greasy AF and everything comes piping hot right out of the wok or deep fryer. Its a cash only establishment, no CC or debit cards. Prices are excellent, super competitive.

I read some great reviews recently on FB and decided to give it a shot. I ordered the 2 pc halibut and chips for me and got individual Chinese dinners for the wife and kid (chow mein and sweet and sour pork and deep fried rice and seet and sour chicken balls). I have only one word to say as a result.....OMFG! Ok technically that's four words but.....damn this place is a gem and the food, and the huge portions, is fantastic. I'll be back.....
