Awaiting Juno posted topic Gonzales Beach

lpoutine,

Awaiting Juno has just posted a new topic entitled "Gonzales Beach" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gonzales has to be one of the best beaches in the City of Victoria - yet it would appear to be somewhat neglected. It's actually disheartening as there is a massive opportunity to make a space that can work better for everyone. There's a rather neglected boulevard accross the street that should really be appended to the park (did you know that Gonzales neighbourhood has less green space than average). Doing so could mean that parking facilities for BOTH cars and bikes could be improved, and some of the space in the park that is now used for parking could be converted back to park space. In addition - an all ages and abilities spray park could be installed (note - this is actually an item that is in the Parks plan as lacking), AND access to the beach for those who are disabled should be improved. This is also a location that is well served by buses - so could really be used better. I've taken a few minutes to do a google satelite view of the area with an idea for some change...

Victoria Watcher posted topic Sooke group calls for slower growth

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Sooke group calls for slower growth" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Transition Sooke is calling on the municipality to slow its growth.
The group came up with a growth scenario proposal for the Official Community Plan (OCP) which looks different than the survey scenarios which emerged from the district.
Under the auspices of the Official Community Plan Advisory Committee, "Picture Sooke" is the largest process currently being undertaken in the district. The OCP will guide Sooke through the next 10 years of growth once adopted by council. The document provides a foundation for direction and decision-making in areas such as community planning and land-use management; growth management; housing; greenhouse gas emissions targets; and social and environmental issues.
Three growth scenarios were released by the district, aiming to spark conversation. Transition Sooke drafted a scenario D.
"The three growth scenarios (A, B, and C) offered by dialog for consideration by the public, rely on a continuing high growth rate," said Transition Sooke board member Alan Dolan in a news release.
Scenario D is focused on low growth and low carbon, allocating most growth to the town centre.
"It envisions a combination of subsidized, affordable, zero-energy housing, independent and local commercial businesses, and lots of access to the ocean for the community to enjoy. A small amount of growth would be allocated to other parts of the district," states a news release.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Shirley Delicious

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Shirley Delicious" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

https://www.capitaldaily.ca/news/a-renowned-community-hub-in-the-woods-off-the-highway (https://www.capitaldaily.ca/news/a-renowned-community-hub-in-the-woods-off-the-highway)

It's December 2012, and Sheena Mercer is driving on a highway hugging the south coast of Vancouver Island. It's dark, sometime in the evening, somewhere west of Sooke, and Mercer's in a camper van.
"Where are we going?" Mercer thought to herself as she navigated the twisting highway with her mother and son. "What is this place?"
The reason for the trip was a bottle of wine: Mercer's mother had promised to have a glass with Phillip du Preez, a friend from Salt Spring Island, since he planned to open a cafe in the unincorporated community of Shirley in the new year.
As they pulled off the highway onto an uphill gravel road, Mercer finally saw the small wooden building that would house the cafe.
"Ohhhh," Mercer said aloud in the camper van.
Du Preez greeted them by uncorking the bottle of wine. He was still formulating his opening plans, but the three soon started dancing and celebrating. The evening turned into night, and by the time the bottle was empty du Preez had a proposition for Mercer: "Do you want to become a partner in the business?"

Victoria Watcher posted topic Ucluelet to allow RV/camper living on private property

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Ucluelet to allow RV/camper living on private property" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
As the owner of Heartwood Kitchen and Shipwreck Pizza, chef Ian Riddick is a familiar face around Ucluelet.
But he still remembers his first trip to the coast with a friend in the 1990s — and camping in their van. Decades later, that style of camping has now become a necessity for many who work in the seaside town.

"I don't get too fired up when I hear about transients and people travelling here because the spirit of the West Coast, this is how a lot of us were introduced to the area," said Riddick.

That's why the chef is welcoming the District of Ucluelet's new six-month pilot project in which property owners can apply for temporary use permits and allow people to live in RVs on their properties.

It's a short-term fix to the extreme shortage of rental housing, and high prices that have forced many seasonal workers into illegal camping situations.

North Shore posted topic Price of Milk?

lpoutine,

North Shore has just posted a new topic entitled "Price of Milk?" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
A question that I've always asked myself: Cows eat grass; cows produce milk. Island Farms and Dairyland collect said milk, process it, put it into 4l plastic containers, and ship it to local grocery stores. I wander down the store aisle, and see that 4l of Island Farms milk is ~ $5.50, while 4l of Dairyland milk is ~$4.50. Why? Closest Island Farms dairy that I know of is on Blanshard next to SoFMA, while the dairyland one (according to the label) is up in Courtenay..

Anyone know?

lpoutine,

max.bravo has just posted a new topic entitled "Racism in Victoria" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

This reddit post contains many examples of people saying they've experienced more racism in Victoria than elsewhere (the states, other cities in canada).

That was surprising to me, but reading on, I see that some examples of racism were obvious (slurs), while others were less obvious things- one is an elderly woman assuming when someone says they got a nanny, the nanny would be filipino.

Is Victoria more racist than other places? If so, is it overt racism, or accidental/due to ignorance? Is there a difference?
