Thought I'd start a thread about some places to stay or eat etc within a few hour drive on the Island as it looks like nobodies flying anywhere for 2021.

We booked a cottage at Port Renfrew Accommodation - Handsome Dan's Cottages (http://handsomedans.ca/) for a few days away over Spring Break. Its about 90 mins drive and self catering

At NY we booked a few nights in Parksville here Amazing Cottage On The Ocean ~ Private Oceanside Acreage ~ Miles Of Beach! - Parksville (vrbo.com) (https://www.vrbo.com/en-ca/cottage-rental/p905483vb?noDates=true&uni_id=1453424) Its one of the original estates before Parksville became what it is. Amazing cabin on a great property if you want privacy and just a place to walk on the beach and no crowds

While in Parksville do yourself a favor and order dinner from Cuckoo in Coombs | Trattoria and Pizzeria (https://cuckooincoombs.com/) its consistently one of the best restaurants we have ever eaten at. Eat in or take out.

As ASE pointed out, Crow and Gate Pub (https://crowandgate.ca/) is a great place to do a little road trip for lunch

In warmer weather a great day trip is the Circle route through Jordan River to Lake Cowichan and back. Its a great drive, just make sure you have a full tank of gas and your ride is reliable. Took the toy car on this route last year and experienced 30 celsius down to 15 and fog and back up to 30 all within a 20km range. Views are spectacular.

Go for a hike and a swim at Matheson Lake, or top of the Malahat to Spectacle Lake

So after our first fishing sojourn of 2021 just south of Nanaimo the boys were really hungry so we decided to exit the back country and invade civilized society; our initial target was the very well known Crow & Gate pub/dining establishment in Cedar but we were in no mood to wait the 45 minutes to be seated - that place was PACKED.

So we opted to backtrack about 5 minutes up the road and were we ever glad we did; we found an excellent neighborhood pub called the Wheatsheaf Pub - wowza! Excellent and very tasty food, nice atmosphere and relatively inexpensive.

Basically if you look at a map of the Nanaimo region its south of the city directly opposite the Cinnabar Valley across the island highway, on Cedar Rd in Cedar proper.

Interestingly its the first pub/restaurant I have been to since Covid where social distancing included ensuring parties were seated at least one seat away even from the rest of your party so in our case the four of us were seated at a table set for six people. Awesome wIngs.....! If you need to get out from between your four walls for some 'sane' sanity time, and are ok driving for an hour this one is well worth the effort IMO. Its not remotely fancy - we were still in our fishing gear and fit right in :) - but in my experience those are by far the best places for really good grub and a cold grog....
