AllseeingEye posted topic The Lakes

lpoutine,

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "The Lakes" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pretty certain this will be the only thumb's up for a non-descript family-style restaurant located in a mid grade hotel chain like Howard Johnson hotels :), but I must say I had the huevos rancheros at the Lakes this morning at the HoJo Royal Oak location and it was simply the best version of that Mexican classic I've ever had in Victoria.

The experience was improved by the fact there is plenty of parking right in front, I didn't have to reserve in advance, or stand around for 45 minutes with hordes of others waiting for a table, I didn't have to take out a second mortgage in order to pay for it, the restaurant is not remotely pretentious nor vying for social media "likes" and in addition to its other virtues its clean, the service prompt and you don't need to take a number and wait and wait....and wait for something as simple as a coffee refill...

So if you're a "rancheros" fan and either live out that way or find yourself near that location give it a shot some time.

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Rockslide Studio - 750 Blanshard Street" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
🔹Downtown Victoria's largest "arts hub" to open in Blanshard Street office complex🔹

An Art Deco-styled office building on Blanshard Street at Fairfield Road in downtown Victoria will soon be transformed into the largest arts hub in the city centre.

"T's crossed, i's dotted - it's official! Say hello to Rockslide Studio's new building!!," says Logan Ford, who spearheaded the effort.

"We've levelled up from 2,500 square feet to nearly 20,000! We'll be joined by the fine folks at the Ministry of Casual Living, Victoria Tool Library, Supply Victoria, and more. This will be downtown Victoria's largest arts hub, and I'm thrilled to have been given the opportunity to make it happen."

Rockslide's new building at 750 Blanshard Street is made possible through the cooperation of Reliance Properties, which acquired the complex in 2019.

Rockslide opened in 2013 and operates out of
Herald Street building in the 600-block.

Transition Sooke fears town can't meet its greenhouse gas emission guidelines

A public-interest group wants the District of Sooke to place an interim moratorium on all new development in the municipality.
Transition Sooke (https://transitionsooke.org/) fears the district can't meet its greenhouse emissions guidelines, preserve carbon capture and maintain the small-town atmosphere if growth goes unfettered.
It made a presentation to council Monday night (Dec. 13) calling for the moratorium.

laconic posted topic Long COVID and ME/CFS (Post viral syndromes)

lpoutine,

laconic has just posted a new topic entitled "Long COVID and ME/CFS (Post viral syndromes)" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
There is growing evidence that Long COVID and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are either the same condition or very closely related.

In the last five years or so there has been a large amount of evidence that ME/CFS is an energy deficit disease. Body mechanisms aren't producing enough energy. One of the defining symptoms is post-exertional malaise (PEM) which is a fancy term for saying that where a normal person might recover from exercise in hours or days, ME/CFS folks will take days, weeks or months to recover.

https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(21)00513-9/fulltext (https://www.mayoclinicproceedings.org/article/S0025-6196(21)00513-9/fulltext)

There is currently no test for diagnosis, so it is largely a disease of exclusion of other fatigue conditions. This affects the health care system since a bevy of test are done (heart, lungs, blood) with no definitive results. At the same time, more extensive and often specialized tests reveal significant problems (2 day CPET, often more than 20% loss of blood to the brain, blood not being able to fill the heart prior to pumping, ineffective mitochondrial function, endothelial dysfunction)

Conventional and complementary therapies are ineffective. Think of being a castaway on an island where there is a lack of food and you are slowly starting. There are plenty of studies that show that letters home, meditation, massage, physiotherapy, supplements, etc will make you feel better, possibly for weeks or months, buy eventually they make things worse because they deplete your energy resources. To make matters worse, feeling better means doing more, which means overdoing it, which means depleting your energy even more. The common doctor strategy of "doubling the dose" creates even more problems.

Insurance companies have been relying on the cruel strategy of graded exercise therapy (same as for most physical rehab... slowing increasing the amount of exercise over weeks) to force people back to work. Refer to the paragraph above for the effect on the patient. This technique was based on a large flawed study. Current recommendations consider it ineffective and possibly harmful.

In Long COVID, people currently suffering from the condition have immediate onset. Surprisingly, they are often people who led very active physical lives before COVID. There is a sense that the number are only the tip of the iceberg. In the castaway analogy, you may function pretty well for years, depending many factors, but suffer a steady overall decline.

The only current "treatment" is "get plenty of rest and don't overdo it", called "pacing". For some people that can look like a reasonably active life. For others, going to the store for groceries or watching television for an hour can debilitating and require hours or days of bed rest. Note that your brain uses about 20% of your energy, so pretty much any activity such as reading, watching television, listening to music is just as bad as physical exercise. For many people, even standing or even sitting for short periods (like an hour) is problematic.

On the good news front. Long COVID has resulted in a sudden rush of funding. Most of the highly underfunded ME/CFS researchers (we're talking big league people such as Harvard, Stanford) have simply moved to adding the COVID keyword to their funding requests.

We've also started to see a recognition of the problem through the establishment of Long COVID treatment centers (one in Vancouver at St. Paul's), however most GP's are not attuned, particularly if you were relatively asymptomatic originally. Fatigue is such a common complaint that GP's will run the standard tests, then prescribe rest or worse yet, diagnose depression and start prescribing medications.

If no cure is found soon this problem will slowly and silently become the next legacy of the COVID crisis.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Langham Court Theatre board shake-up

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Langham Court Theatre board shake-up" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Big changes in the board of a volunteer-run Victoria theatre company are being hailed as a shift toward inclusivity or a calculated takeover, depending on who you ask.

At an annual general meeting for Langham Court Theatre Society last Sunday that dragged on for five hours, voters elected six board members. The majority are first-time board members for the theatre, which has been criticized as exclusive and lacking in representation.

The theatre reached a settlement this year in a human rights tribunal case in which a Black actor alleged the company and a director discriminated against her on the basis of race after she was told there were no roles for Black women in a play.

Newly elected president Janine Longy, who had been previously elected as a member-at-large, and vice-president Kathy Macovichuk, whose role was not up for re-election, have resigned since the vote.

________________________

"We've been told many, many times that we're privileged white racists. … It's like a country club or golf club or something," she said. "It's not like that. We've always been very welcoming for everyone."

________________________

After an emotional discussion at the meeting, members voted to revoke a lifetime membership for Judy Treloar, the director who told a Black actor there were no roles for Black women in a play.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Victoria Now - online news

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Victoria Now - online news" in forum "Online Media".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Victoria Now has quietly built up a bit of a presence here. It's at least partly owned by GSL Group, the folks that run the arena and own the Royals hockey team.

------------ QUOTE ----------
This is the first venture into news media for the GSL Group, but that does not mean the company comes without experience. Terry Armstrong, vice president at the GSL Group (https://www.gslholdings.com/), has spent close to 30 years in the news industry, including eight years as the group publisher for the Okanagan Valley Newspaper Group.
VictoriaNow will have a strong presence in the Victoria market, with reporters and sales staff based in the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.
"The GSL Group identified with how NowMedia has connected with the local communities in the Thompson-Okanagan and strongly believes Victoria is a prime market for this brand of media platform, which focuses on the stuff that matters and understands its role in building community," Armstrong said.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Provincial autonomy

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Provincial autonomy" in forum "Victoria Politics".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he wants the province to be a "nation within a nation" by increasing its autonomy in several areas, including policing, taxation and immigration.
Moe made the initial statement during a radio interview on Sunday and then referred to the idea again on social media Tuesday morning. "Saskatchewan needs to be a nation within a nation," he tweeted. "When the federal government implements policies that are detrimental to our province, our government will continue to stand up for Saskatchewan people."
On Tuesday afternoon, Moe said he is "not talking about separation. We are talking about being a Saskatchewan cultural identity within the nation of Canada — but being a nation within a nation."
________________________________
When asked on Tuesday what he wants with respect to being a "nation within a nation," Moe pointed to Quebec.
"Quebec has a very different agreement when it comes to immigration with the federal government than we do here in the province of Saskatchewan. We want that agreement," he said.
"We saw Quebec most recently with the child care agreement — Quebec has a very different agreement than any of the other provinces in Canada. And we want that as well."

Victoria Watcher posted topic Fernwood, Hillside-Quadra and North Park neighbourhood plans

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Fernwood, Hillside-Quadra and North Park neighbourhood plans" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
City seeks input on three Victoria neighbourhood plans
Green space, businesses top concerns for Fernwood, Hillside-Quadra and North Park

Residents can help create final drafts of plans for Fernwood, Hillside-Quadra and North Park communities.
Feedback from the first two phases of public engagement are incorporated and now residents can share what ideas they like, they'd change or what they think is missing.
____________________
A common engagement theme was the desire for a 15-minute community – something that includes a range of housing choices, on and off transit corridors with walkable, lively urban villages and public spaces to bring people together, support local businesses and foster a sense of community identity.
____________________
Highlights of the Fernwood draft plan include expansion of the village with more and refreshed public spaces, opportunities for smaller shops and more housing choices. Ideas include transforming Bay Street into a better place for people, with more trees, housing choices, shops and wider sidewalks, crossings and bus transit.
____________________
The Hillside-Quadra plan includes ideas for new green spaces and public plazas; housing opportunities for renters and buyers of different incomes; and opportunities for Quadra Village and smaller commercial corners to evolve over time while maintaining small spaces.
____________________
The North Park plan includes ideas for a new public plaza in the village and more green space with options for the village to grow while keeping spaces for small and local-serving shops as well as opportunities for maker-spaces, artisans and creative businesses.

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "CoV zoning density plan for "missing middle"" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
not clear what a Julty report is.

An example of a trade-off required to permit more MMH relates to parking, staff explained in a Julty report. Housing meant for up to four families would require as many as four spaces. Placing that onsite could reduce shared green space and the urban forest, while leaving residents to park elsewhere would impact street or laneway parking. The city hopes to hear residents' preferences on these choices through its ongoing community consultation.
Following the engagement sessions, "it's definitely too early to say anything conclusive about what we're hearing (from the public)," MacLean said. The first session on Oct. 30 saw just over a dozen participants at the city's online meeting. "There are definitely people who are keen to see more of these housing options introduced to the city, and others that really want to make sure the (new housing) will be a good neighbour," MacLean said.

i love the way that is presented. there are those in favour and those that want "good neighbours". nobody opposed, right?

Victoria Watcher posted topic New Zealand to abolish single-family zoning in most cities

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "New Zealand to abolish single-family zoning in most cities" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The government shocked everyone yesterday as Minister of Housing Megan Woods and Minister for the Environment David Parker held a joint press conference in the beehive theatrette with Leader of the Opposition Judith Collins and Opposition Housing Spokesperson Nicola Willis.
The only thing more surprising was what they were actually announcing: New Zealand is abolishing single family zoning.
This is unequivocally fantastic. The government's housing program, while good in many respects, has been plagued with a big hole (https://www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2021/03/24/the-housing-donut/) which this reform will go a long way to fill.
Building on top of the NPS-UD, the government will be forcing councils to allow people to build as-of-right up to three homes of up to three storeys on most sites in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Wellington, and Christchurch. This is similar to the rules we have in Auckland currently in the Mixed Housing Urban Zone (MHU) – our second densest residential zone, which makes up about a fifth of our residential land area.

Local builder Formwell Homes unveils first townhouse project as demand for 'missing middle' homes soars in Victoria

Local homebuilder Formwell Homes has unveiled its first residential project as demand for 'missing middle' housing reaches an all-time high in Victoria. Formwell co-founders Sam Ganong and Kyle Ryan – no strangers to the Capital's real-estate development industry with a combined 30-years during which they helped deliver more than 800-units of single- and multi-family housing – have joined efforts on a traditionally-inspired townhome development in Victoria's Burnside Gorge community near the Selkirk Waterfront and Galloping Goose Regional Trail. Known as Washington, Formwell's introductory offering (at 3080 Washington Avenue) will deliver 34 two, three and four-bedroom townhouses to the up-and-coming neighbourhood. Ganong and Ryan started Formwell with a goal to improve the multi-family living experience through a commitment to practical human-centric design philosophies, while closely taking into account their own personal experiences raising families. Both having wor
ked extensively in residential new home development and construction, the co-founders realized a collective regard for the townhome archetype. "Living in a townhome with a growing family really shaped my passion for improving livability within townhome residences," said father of two young children, Sam Ganong. "Recognizing the opportunity this housing form provides for families, with the single-family home increasingly becoming out of reach for many, now felt like the right time to pursue the creation of more family-friendly, functional homes across the city." Mike K. posted topic The Pandora Papers leak and Canadian off-shore tax havens

lpoutine,

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "The Pandora Papers leak and Canadian off-shore tax havens" in forum "Victoria Politics".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
The offshore fortunes of prime ministers, royalty, billionaires, athletes and celebrities are being laid bare in a giant new leak of tax-haven financial records, even bigger than the Panama Papers, revealed today by a global consortium of media outlets.

The leaked files, dubbed the Pandora Papers, show 35 current or former world leaders and more than 300 other public officials around the globe who have held assets in or through tax havens. Former British prime minister Tony Blair, the current prime ministers of the Czech Republic and Kenya, and the king of Jordan have all benefited from the anonymity or tax advantages of their offshore holdings, the records reveal.

The 11.9 million files — consisting of everything from emails to bank statements, incorporation documents and shareholder registries — are from 14 firms that provide offshore services, and were leaked by a confidential source to the Washington-based International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The ICIJ has provided access to the files to 150 of its partner news organizations around the world, including CBC/Radio-Canada and the Toronto Star in Canada.

So far, the CBC and the Star have identified the names of at least 500 Canadian citizens or residents in the records.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Sidney proposes capping building heights

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Sidney proposes capping building heights" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Seems to me they would want to leave some area to attract some towers with views, big tax base.

https://www.vicnews.com/news/sidney-staff-report-proposes-cap-on-future-building-heights/ (https://www.vicnews.com/news/sidney-staff-report-proposes-cap-on-future-building-heights/)

Sidney's upward trend in building heights might be coming to an end.
A staff report, part of the official community plan (OCP) review, is recommending Sidney cap the elevation of future buildings along Beacon Avenue east of Fifth Street to three storeys, and to four storeys elsewhere in the downtown core, with a more detailed height allowance map to be worked out for later public input.
The report leaves room for downtown buildings with five storeys, but only in the area from Highway 17 to the half block along Beacon Avenue before Fifth Street, and only by approval through a rezoning or variance request if a "significant public amenity" such as social housing is part of the proposal.

What's the fastest way for a billionaire to double his money? To sell a bunch of millennials dirt in the desert for vastly inflated sums of money.

Telosa is an American eco city idea so grand that they don't yet know where they'll put it (note: it'll go to whichever state gives them the biggest tax break or goodies). Telosa will be a city of five million people, the proponents say, and it'll have live in residents by 2030.

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Local Greater Victoria Community Association issues" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Editor's Note: This opinion essay is the first time we have published writing of its type in Capital Daily. Opinion pieces will always be categorized under the "Capital Ideas" tag. We are hoping that by offering a platform for informed opinion writing we can spark conversations about this imperfect city, and we eagerly anticipate hearing from people and groups on all points of Victoria's political compass. Submissions can be sent to contact@capitaldaily.ca (mailto:contact@capitaldaily.ca), and should be specifically about issues of governance, city planning, politics, and the future of Victoria.

I am a new board member of the Fernwood Community Association (FCA), one of a dozen community associations in Victoria with an official relationship with city hall, and I have been stunned and disappointed by my experience. The FCA is run by a coterie of longtime residents that routinely disregards its own bylaws—or applies them only selectively and self-servingly—reactively opposes change, and oversees a disorganized and mismanaged organization with little transparency or accountability. Newcomers are treated with suspicion and the organization is run much more like a private club than an accountable public organization.
The experience has led me to ask questions about the origins and role of community associations in Victoria more broadly.

According to CarMax (https://www.carmax.com/articles/car-color-popularity), the largest used car retailer in the U.S., black was the best-selling car color last year, accounting for 22.25 percent of sales, followed closely by white at 19.34 percent of sales, gray (17.63 percent), and silver (14.64 percent).

i think red is probably up there. then further down the line blue green and yellow. brown and gold probably further down.

so why are most houses some form of brown?

Victoria Watcher posted topic Habitat for Humanity artist-painted door auction

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Habitat for Humanity artist-painted door auction" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Habitat for Humanity Victoria has pooled the talents of more than 100 local artists for an online auction of their original creations — all of them made using doors.
Artists were given vouchers for a door selling for $100 or less at one of Habitat's ReStores, and then got to work turning it into a piece of art.

TFord posted topic Two fast jets flying low in Vic & spraying something?

lpoutine,

TFord has just posted a new topic entitled "Two fast jets flying low in Vic & spraying something?" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I've cross posted this as I'm trying to get eyes on it and some answers... (sorry in advance)
Anyone else notice the two jets flying fast & low on each others wing these last few days..? super weird, are they military? they looked white in colour. This morning and this afternoon I couldn't help notice the streaks of vapour across the sky, quite low maybe 300 - 500ft.

I actually watched as the circled Vic West and appeared to spray on and off at will. Huge blooms of white vapour from the wings, on and off.

What the hell is this? I'm not interested in chemtrails or conspiracy theories, just facts please.. I am actually a little disturbed at what I seen. I don't want to sound silly but as they passed directly over head and very low, I almost thought I could taste something in the air, am I losing it????

sebberry posted topic Have Your Say: Neighbourhood Boundaries

lpoutine,

sebberry has just posted a new topic entitled "Have Your Say: Neighbourhood Boundaries" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
May 10, 2021

Victoria City Council is seeking resident feedback on proposed changes to boundaries in the following neighbourhoods: Fernwood, Oaklands, Jubilee, North Park, Fairfield, Downtown, Harris Green and Burnside Gorge.

"The intent is to understand where people see themselves living in the city and to align neighbourhood boundaries with that sense of place. For example, there are parts of Fairfield that feel more like Downtown so we want to make sure those feelings are reflected in the neighbourhood map of the city," said Mayor Lisa Helps. "Ultimately, the residents of Victoria decide, which is why we're going to go out and ask if our proposed neighbourhood boundaries are right."

Residents are also asked to provide feedback on other proposed changes such as neighbourhood land use review committee structures for Rockland, Fairfield and Gonzales, neighbourhood merging for Downtown and Harris Green, and merging the north and south Jubilee neighbourhood associations.

In 2019, Council introduced an action to "resolve anomalies in neighbourhood boundaries" in the Strong, Liveable Neighbourhoods section of the City's Strategic Plan. In February of this year, Council held a workshop and made several observations including:

possible reconciliation of geographic anomalies that may fit better in an adjacent neighbourhood
opportunities to better match boundaries with where residents perceive themselves to belong
some village centres are divided between neighbourhoods

The City would like to hear from all residents regarding these proposed adjustments. Engagement is open from May 10 to June 7.

Results pertaining to specific neighbourhooods will be provided to the neighbourhood associations to inform their submission to the City on boundary changes. Full survey results will be included in the staff report to Council in September 2021 and will be made available to the public at that time.

If approved, the changes would be formally adopted and the Official Community Plan and Local Area and Neighbourhood Plans would be amended in 2022.

To see maps of the proposed boundary adjustments, and to have your say, visit: engage.victoria.ca.
