Mike K. posted topic Nanaimo Man

lpoutine,

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Nanaimo Man" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm shocked we don't already have a Nanaimo Man thread.

Here's one from the RCMP, released today:

On the morning of Wednesday October 21st, officers responded to several 911 calls of a naked man running randomly through city streets. The only description provided was that he was large and hairy. The first sighting came in around 6:30 am in the downtown core. Patrols were made for the man however he was not located. Officers caught a break when just before noon, reports started coming in of another naked man running around Port Drive. The attending officers quickly deduced this was this man from before. The man was eventually located amongst some rail cars and promptly arrested for Causing a Disturbance. While being lead away with a blanket draped over his torso, the man was over heard saying that he was not making the best of decisions- no argument was offered by the officers.

Victoria Watcher posted topic North Quadra project raises concerns over loss of Garry oaks

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "North Quadra project raises concerns over loss of Garry oaks" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Neighbours of a proposed nine-home development off the north end of Quadra Street are calling on Saanich to rescind subdivision approval to save an established Garry oak ecosystem on the largely undeveloped property.
Municipal staff estimate at least 36 trees and likely more will be removed to make way for the development. "The community came together because Garry oak ecosystems are rare — there's not a lot of them left that are intact," area resident Kate Hamm said Friday.
https://www.timescolonist.com/real-estate/north-quadra-project-raises-concerns-over-loss-of-garry-oaks-1.24226817 (https://www.timescolonist.com/real-estate/north-quadra-project-raises-concerns-over-loss-of-garry-oaks-1.24226817)
Haji Charania, president of the North Quadra Community Association, suggested a proposal with fewer houses would be more suitable for the site.
People are more aware of the impact of the loss of Garry oak trees these days. "You can never get it back."
Charania is also concerned about increased traffic in the neighbourhood, with two nearby schools, Lake Hill Elementary and St. Margaret's School.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Saanich couple faces $300,000 storm drain bill

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Saanich couple faces $300,000 storm drain bill" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Michelle and Simon Gowing map out the plans for their new Saanich house.

They bought the property in August and initially planned to renovate it. They completed the proper inspections and structural safety checks before buying, but after tearing up the floorboards, they found a cracked foundation, something not found in their inspection.

They decided to start from scratch and knock the original home down, but that's when everything took a turn.
"We had all of our plans, our architect's designed, we'd spoken with the municipality. We were ready to submit for the building permit and the demolition permit and at that point, when we did do those submissions, that's when we were flagged," Michelle said.

AllseeingEye posted topic So this happened today - NetFlix

lpoutine,

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "So this happened today - NetFlix" in forum "Arts, Culture and Entertainment".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
So a Netflix location manager dropped by our place today literally out of the blue after I spotted a van cruising by several times with a guy in the passenger seat snapping pics with a large fancy camera.

Turns out they want to potentially use our place to film a new series - "Maid". Never heard of it, I gather its a new series.

I'm told by some Vancouver contacts that work in the industry that if a production company selects your home it can be potentially very lucrative if the series lasts more than a few episodes, and especially if its renewed and interior or exterior property scenes are required over a period of time. What they do is literally take over and put the family up in a hotel of their choice with a daily per diem for food, etc. In our case I hope they intend to pay the kennel bill for two cats as well.....

Is anyone on VV in the local movie biz and/or are there any homeowners on here who have done this sort of thing in the past? I presume all the big production houses are bonded and insured out to the kazoo, but still I can picture some 300 lb oaf of a gaffer tripping and breaking something....

I've no clue whatsoever what these companies pay homeowners for location shoots but apparently it can be substantial, even going so far as to paint interiors or re-do floors (presumably with the owner's permission lol) if the shoot requires it. One of the Vancouver guys, who has produced shows for everyone from BCTV to CBC to PBS said if they selected our place and the series was successful, i.e. lasted more than a few episodes, we could dust off our retirement plans. Hm. Not sure if Mark was telling me the straight goods or just having me on for a laugh. Seriously - anyone have any knowledge in regards?

VIResident posted topic Post COVID Economy

lpoutine,

VIResident has just posted a new topic entitled "Post COVID Economy" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps this topic will help some to anticipate, and, tease out upcoming opportunities and steer clear of pitfalls.

I'll start out with this report.

The pandemic has caused the world's economies to diverge But its long-term impact will be even more far-reaching. - The Economisthttps://www.economist.com/leaders/2020/10/08/the-pandemic-has-caused-the-worlds-economies-to-diverge (https://www.economist.com/leaders/2020/10/08/the-pandemic-has-caused-the-worlds-economies-to-diverge)

....February the coronavirus pandemic struck the world economy with the biggest shock since the second world war. Lockdowns and a slump in consumer spending led to a labour-market implosion in which the equivalent of nearly 500m full-time jobs disappeared almost overnight. World trade shuddered as factories shut down and countries closed their borders. An even deeper economic catastrophe was avoided thanks only to unprecedented interventions in financial markets by central banks, government aid to workers and failing firms, and the expansion of budget deficits to near-wartime levels.

As a recovery takes place, however, huge gaps between the performance of countries are opening up—which could yet recast the world's economic order. By the end of next year, according to forecasts by the oecd, America's economy will be the same size as it was in 2019 but China's will be 10% larger. Europe will still languish beneath its pre-pandemic level of output and could do so for several years—a fate it may share with Japan, which is suffering a demographic squeeze. It is not just the biggest economic blocs that are growing at different speeds. In the second quarter of this year, according to ubs, a bank, the distribution of growth rates across 50 economies was at its widest for at least 40 years.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Vancouver : SIX homes per lot

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Vancouver : SIX homes per lot" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
https://www.sightline.org/2020/09/16/good-news-vancouvers-six-homes-per-lot-proposal-could-work/ (https://www.sightline.org/2020/09/16/good-news-vancouvers-six-homes-per-lot-proposal-could-work/)

The latest North American city rethinking its low-density zoning for better affordability and sustainability is one of the epicenters of modern zoning reform: Vancouver BC. Can their six-homes-per-lot plan work for affordability?
For decades, Vancouver has led the continent (https://www.sightline.org/2016/02/17/why-vancouver-trounces-the-rest-of-cascadia-in-building-adus/) in re-legalizing small accessory homes: basement units known locally as "secondary suites" and alley-facing backyard homes, called "laneway houses." Now, as those ideas have radiated out to Washington, Oregon (https://www.sightline.org/2018/12/31/cascadias-five-most-important-adu-victories-of-2018/), Idaho (https://boisedev.com/news/2020/04/01/all-about-adus-accessory-dwellings-gain-popularity-in-boise/), California (https://www.curbed.com/2019/10/11/20909545/adus-development-california-real-estate-housing-shortage), Alberta (https://dailyhive.com/calgary/calgary-secondary-suites-registered-reform), Alaska (https://www.adn.com/business-economy/2018/06/28/anchorages-new-accessory-dwelling-ordinance-makes-some-big-changes-in-housing-rules/) and elsewhere, Vancouver is brainstorming new ways to legalize housing.
On Monday, Mayor Kennedy Stewart laid what looks like some of the groundwork for a 2022 re-election campaign by endorsing what could be Vancouver's next step: up to six homes on any owner-occupied lot (https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/british-columbia/article-vancouver-mayor-kennedy-stewart-seeks-to-permit-up-to-six-properties/?utm_source=Sightline%20Institute&utm_medium=web-email&utm_campaign=Sightline%20News%20Selections) if at least two are made permanently affordable to middle-income households.

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Server switch - expect site access issues October 3-4" in forum "City of Victoria".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tonight (Saturday, Oct 3) we will be upgrading the server that runs this website. While the switch will be instantaneous, the pointers to this website from internet service providers will have to update to reflect the new server, and this takes 2-24 hours, typically, so some of you may get access shortly after the switch, others may not get access until late Sunday.

The switch will take place at around 9PM tonight (Saturday) and will also affect the Citified website.

Thumbs up to Kapten for the details!

Fountain Tire, a business landmark in downtown Victoria's Old Town district, is at the centre of a redevelopment effort that could deliver 250 rental apartments to the 600-blocks of Chatham and Herald streets at Government Street.

An aerial view of the 600-blocks of Chatham and Herald streets between Douglas and Government streets in downtown Victoria. A proposal to redevelop 611-635 Chatham Street and 610-618 Herald Street into mixed-use rental apartments and commercial spaces, identified in blue, is in the early stages of the municipal planning process.

lpoutine,

Langford Rat has just posted a new topic entitled "Caesar Salad" in forum "Food and Dining, Hotel and Hospitality Industry Discussions".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was talking to a guy at work the other day (he's probably early 40s) and we got on the topic of Caesar salads. I mentioned how I missed getting tableside service when you ordered Caesar at a "fancy" place. He had no idea what I was talking about…and was a little incredulous when I described what I meant. Wow! Has it really been that long? It was such a big (impressive) production as they rubbed the garlic around the wooden bowl and mashed in the anchovies and coddled egg, poring the oil and vinegar from a great height with a flourish. A little entertaining banter (or not…they seemed to know when to engage you and when to just keep quiet and make the salad). It must be a lost art. Is there anywhere in Victoria that still offers this?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pricing and sales have started for this small townhome development on Wilson in Vic West - just near to the Save on Foods.

http://wilsoncommons.ca/

1 beds (478 sq ft) start at $415,000
2 beds (1031 sq ft) start at $760,000 with 3 at a covenanted 15% of market price as 'affordable' units at $646,000
3 beds (1149 sq ft) at $835,000

Price per square foot seems excessive to me - the 1 bedroom units seem really expensive, but I am not an expert.

John M. posted topic Upcoming BC Provincial Election

lpoutine,

John M. has just posted a new topic entitled "Upcoming BC Provincial Election" in forum "Victoria Politics".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Any idea about potential candidates on the South Island in either this year or next year's general election? Here are some of my thoughts:

Esquimalt-Metchosin
Incumbent Mitzi Dean (NDP) is very likely running again
BC Liberal: Probably not Barb Desjardins again. Maybe someone from Colwood or Metchosin?
Green: ?
NDP: Mitzi Dean

Langford-Juan de Fuca
Incumbent John Horgan (NDP) is running again
BC Liberal: ? (Could this finally be Stew Young's time to risk it, maybe in anticipation of this potentially being Horgan's last term, therefore opening up 2025 for him)
Green: ?
NDP: John Horgan

Oak Bay-Gordon Head
Incumbent Andrew Weaver (Independent, former Green) retiring.
BC Liberal: Roxanne Helme (Nominated)
Green: ?
NDP: ? (Marianne Alto?)

Saanich North-Islands
Incumbent Adam Olsen (Green) is running again
BC Liberal: Stephen Roberts again? I know he's still president of the riding assocation. I could also see a current or former municipal politician, such as Carl Jensen or Steve Price, going for it
Green: Adam Olsen
NDP: Gary Holman has maintained his community presence, but may be getting up there. Maybe Central Saanich councillor Zeb King? (known NDPer)
Saanich South
Incumbent Lana Popham (NDP) is running again
BC Liberal: David Calder again?
Green: ?
NDP: Lana Popham

Victoria-Beacon Hill
Incumbent Carole James (NDP) retiring
BC Liberal: ?
Green: ? (Maybe Kalen Harris again? Racelle Kooy? Or even Lisa Helps?)
NDP: ?
Could Ben Isitt take a run here? For the NDP (his traditional home, but now seems quite unlikely)? The Greens? Maybe even the nascent Eco-Socialists?)

Victoria-Swan Lake
Incumbent Rob Fleming (NDP) presumed to be running again
BC Liberal: ?
Green: ? (Or maybe Racelle Kooy here? Not sure where she lives)
NDP: Presumed to be Rob Fleming?

Victoria Watcher posted topic Sandstone development - south Nanaimo

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Sandstone development - south Nanaimo" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Vancouver company that owns the 726-acre Sandstone site at the south end of Nanaimo hopes for a public hearing this fall to present a revised vision.
"It is basically going to be a game-changer for south Nanaimo," Ian Porter, Seacliff Properties' director of development, said Wednesday.

Victoria Watcher posted topic 2020 Point In Time Homeless Count

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "2020 Point In Time Homeless Count" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
On the evening of March 11, 2020, 1,523 individuals were found to be homeless in the capital region compared to 1,525 on March 15, 2018. Due to year over year changes in methodology, these two numbers do not necessarily suggest trends in the region.

https://www.crd.bc.ca/about/news/article/2020/07/31/2020-greater-victoria-point-in-time-count-results-announced (https://www.crd.bc.ca/about/news/article/2020/07/31/2020-greater-victoria-point-in-time-count-results-announced)

The PiT count should be treated as an under-estimate. Some individuals value their privacy and prefer not to participate in the survey while others experiencing "hidden" homelessness are difficult to reach and, therefore, would not be included in this count.

The results of the 2020 PiT Count and survey will be used with ongoing shelter-use data, as well as information gathered through planning, for the creation of a Coordinated Assessment and Access service and Homelessness Management Information System which will improve service delivery, real-time reporting of homelessness levels and help achieve better outcomes for homeless individuals. An accompanying technical appendix was also developed by the CSPC and released with the key findings of the 2020 Greater Victoria Point-in-Time Homeless Study.

The requirements for physical distancing and isolation within the COVID-19 public health emergency measures contributed to a significant increase in the number of people sheltering out-of-doors in parks and along boulevards following the March 11 count and survey. A number of extreme weather shelters could not remain open beyond their planned March 31 closures and established shelters had to substantially reduce their nightly admissions due to the need to ensure individuals were provided with the ability to maintain an appropriate physical distance. As well, many people had to leave informal sheltering spaces ("couch surfing") with family and friends due to the need for physical distancing. Correction and health institutions were forced to discharge people into homelessness during the emergency because there were no new sheltering options available in the community as the pandemic deepened.

The closure and significant curtailment of outreach services during the pandemic also contributed to the congregation of large numbers of unsheltered people in areas where limited services remained available (Pandora Avenue) and in public spaces where emergency services were provided (Topaz Park).

most of the above is garbage.

the PIT count was March 11th. This news article is March 23:

https://www.vicnews.com/news/beacon-hill-topaz-royal-athletic-parks-to-open-as-temporary-sites-for-the-homeless/ (https://www.vicnews.com/news/beacon-hill-topaz-royal-athletic-parks-to-open-as-temporary-sites-for-the-homeless/)
Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps announced to the public on March 23 that all involved parties are working to ensure that none of the parks transform into tent cities, as have been seen near the BC Court House and in Saanich in previous years, ensuring that structures will be installed and staff will be on site to ensure proper social distancing and cleanliness.
In addition, BC Housing has purchased the property at 938 Mason St. and will temporarily use the site as a triage centre and COVID-19 test site for Victoria's homeless population.
Campers will be allowed in Topaz and Beacon Hill parks immediately, while the Royal Athletic Park is set to open as soon as possible, with the aim to be open by the end of the week.

from the count:

what does that have to do with the march 11th count? and secondly why have we never ever seen the numbers for the closures despite this line of crap fed to us continually?

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Things are getting worse in DW Victoria thanks to the current slate at city hall. Something needs to be done. I have found that our population of extra special homeless people downtown is becoming increasingly more obnoxious and aggressive.

Once this element reaches a certain critical mass they will become a lot more aggressive. Time to act.

Victoria Watcher posted topic South Island Prosperity Project (SIPP) initiatives and issues

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "South Island Prosperity Project (SIPP) initiatives and issues" in forum "Victoria and South Island Economy".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
------------ QUOTE ----------
A business hub for the marine sector could be the anchor property in an under-used part of downtown Victoria that the city's mayor says is the perfect location for an innovation district.
-----------------------------

i agree wholeheartedly. and luckily point hope/ralmax and victoria shipyards have deep enough pickets to build it if it makes sense.

https://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/a-hub-for-ocean-innovation-pitched-for-victoria-1.24171925 (https://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/a-hub-for-ocean-innovation-pitched-for-victoria-1.24171925)

------------ QUOTE ----------
The Ocean Futures Innovation Hub would allow marine companies large and small to share resources, provide mentorship to marine start-ups and act as an incubator for growth, according to proponents of the project. The hub would be a key step in putting the West Coast on the map as a place where the marine sector can thrive and innovate for the future, said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.
-----------------------------

------------ QUOTE ----------
SIPPS and the City of Victoria accelerated the request-for-proposals process because they believe the innovation hub could attract federal and provincial government funding as part of the post-pandemic stimulus plan, Helps said.
The innovation hub could diversify Victoria's economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, she said.

-----------------------------

we don't need a post-covid stimulus plan using tax dollars. we need to go back to normal now.

------------ QUOTE ----------
Helps said the project will work closely with Indigenous groups who have 12,000 years of knowledge with respect to the ocean.
-----------------------------

usual pandering.

------------ QUOTE ----------
Dallas Gislason, director of economic development for the South Island Prosperity Partnership, said Canada has the longest coastline in the world, yet its marine industry drastically underperforms compared to smaller countries.
Norway's ocean industry generated about $100 billion Cda for their economy in 2017 versus approximately $20 billion generated by Canada's ocean industry the same year, according Gislason, based on Canada's Ocean Strategy and a similar economic reports published by the Norwegian government.
"Why are they outperforming us so heavily?" Gislason asked. "They invest heavily in the infrastructure, from research to commercialization to helping small and medium companies turn into big companies."

-----------------------------

they are outperforming because they have more people using a smaller coastline - all of europe.

------------ QUOTE ----------
The oceans innovation hub could attract marine companies from all over the world, bringing high-paying jobs to Victoria, Gislason said.
With many other industries suffering due to COVID-19, including the arts and entertainment industry and sports industry, it's critically important to boost other sectors to spur the economic recovery, Gislason said.
-----------------------------

entertainment and arts and sports will be back as soon as the damn government says it's ok. certainly years sooner than even a site will be selected for this white elephant.

i understand the sipp has to be seen to be doing something for all the tax money they get. but try harder to come up with something that makes sense.

FORBES: Worse Than Covid-19? China And Kazakhstan Disagree Over 'New' Virus

".......The health ministry did say, however, that the pneumonia cases in the country all showed clinical symptoms of abnormalities. So, something is awry with this pneumonia, whatever that may mean."

"It was unclear why the Chinese embassy considered it a new type of pneumonia, but saying so hearkened back to December, when medical doctors from Hubei province, in the city of Wuhan, discovered an "unknown pneumonia" that acted a lot like SARS. Some of them were rounded up and jailed for spreading "rumors" about the outbreak, later to turn into a global pandemic that has infected 11.8 million people globally and killed over 545,000, according to the World Health Organization's statistics (https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200709-covid-19-sitrep-171.pdf?sfvrsn=9aba7ec7_2)from yesterday.
On Friday, Kazakhstan's health ministry officially dismissed the Chinese government's warning of a strange pneumonia, saying the information given by the Chinese embassy was "incorrect".

lpoutine,

dasmo has just posted a new topic entitled "Bill 19 COVID-19 Related Measures Act" in forum "Victoria Politics".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This Bill is being introduced that appears to give our Lieutenant Governor in Council (an un-elected representative of the queen) dictatorial powers without limitation while we are in a declared state of emergency (that has no checks or balances or any parameters to define it). It also absolves anyone in the government from liability in any of the shenanigans that have transpired.

https://cowichanchronicles.com/ (https://cowichanchronicles.com/)

i'll admit to not knowing about this man's long-time writings. but i quite liked this bit:

------------ QUOTE ----------
The question readers have asked me most often over the years is, Where do I get my "article ideas"? Often followed by a quick, "You must have a massive archives."

They're right about my archives but I wouldn't be much of a storyteller if I didn't go back—way back—to the beginning. Growing up in postwar Victoria (specifically, Saanich's Swan Lake area, as yet unspoiled by urban sprawl) seems like another world to me now.

It was, to some degree, a Tom Sawyer-esque childhood, with its farms, lakes, woods and miles of railway tracks—and the American parallel isn't all that inaccurate.

You see, when I was a boy we didn't have, as I saw it, any visible Canadian history. My parents' generation had come through the Great Depression and just fought the Second World War as equal partners with their allies—Canada had had, ever so briefly, the world's third largest navy. Yet there seemed to be no visible national identity; at least, as seen through the eyes of a child.

Victoria Watcher posted topic Ocean Boulevard (Esquimalt Lagoon road) future access - open or closed

lpoutine,

Victoria Watcher has just posted a new topic entitled "Ocean Boulevard (Esquimalt Lagoon road) future access - open or closed" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
An online survey about the future of Colwood's Ocean Boulevard is asking whether the scenic roadway by Esquimalt Lagoon should be closed.
The decision to gauge public opinion grew out of the COVID-19 prevention measure of shutting the road to discourage large gatherings, said Colwood Mayor Rob Martin.
__________________
Of the more than 500 people who have responded to the survey so far, one-third support closing the road, one-third support a full opening and one-third back the "hybrid" idea of things such as periodic closures, Martin said.
Among those in support of keeping the road open are people who live in the area and work in Victoria, and make the "purposeful choice" to go over to Ocean Boulevard on the drive home, Martin said.
"They choose to go down Ocean Boulevard because that's an opportunity for them to unwind before they arrive at home," he said. "I completely understand that approach, as well."
Others consider the boulevard to be an important traffic outlet as density increases. Roadwork is currently blocking access via the north end of the peninsula.
To take part in the survey, which closes June 15, go to letstalkcolwood.ca/oceanboulevard (http://letstalkcolwood.ca/oceanboulevard).

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Asian Giant Hornet discovered in Washington State" in forum "Urban Issues".

BLAINE, Wash. — In his decades of beekeeping, Ted McFall had never seen anything like it.

As he pulled his truck up to check on a group of hives near Custer, Wash., in November, he could spot from the window a mess of bee carcasses on the ground. As he looked closer, he saw a pile of dead members of the colony in front of a hive and more carnage inside — thousands and thousands of bees with their heads torn from their bodies and no sign of a culprit.

"I couldn't wrap my head around what could have done that," Mr. McFall said.

Only later did he come to suspect that the killer was what some researchers simply call the "murder hornet."

With queens that can grow to two inches long, Asian giant hornets can use mandibles shaped like spiked shark fins to wipe out a honeybee hive in a matter of hours, decapitating the bees and flying away with the thoraxes to feed their young. For larger targets, the hornet's potent venom and stinger — long enough to puncture a beekeeping suit — make for an excruciating combination that victims have likened to hot metal driving into their skin.

In Japan, the hornets kill up to 50 people a year. Now, for the first time, they have arrived in the United States.

PPPdev posted topic Block x Block presented by Aryze

lpoutine,

PPPdev has just posted a new topic entitled "Block x Block presented by Aryze" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello VV'ers, A few months ago we launched an initiative called Block x Block where people or organizations can submit a block of their neighbourhood for us and an architecture team to reimagine. The ground rules are simple: 1. It must reasonably conform to the existing policy context.2. Design priority will be given to everything before the private car.3. It will benefit the whole, not the aggregated individual property interests.4. Buildout has to be possible within a 15 year time horizon, or less.5. It must be bold, fun, and designed to inspire. We have just opened up the next round and are working with Diamond Schmitt Architects (dsai.ca) on the design. If you have a block that you think could use some imagination, we encourage you to submit a response for consideration. The last entry was done in North Park with D'Ambrosio Architecture + urbanism and can be found here: https://www.talktoaryze.ca/north-park (https://www.talktoaryze.ca/north-park) If you have any questions, do n

Mike K. posted topic Continuum Architecture | Formerly KPL James Architecture

lpoutine,

Mike K. has just posted a new topic entitled "Continuum Architecture | Formerly KPL James Architecture" in forum "Urban Design".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
KPL James Architecture, which is one of (if not the) oldest architectural firms in Victoria has rebranded as Continuum Architecture:

We at KPL James Architecture are celebrating our 110th year in business with new partners and a new company name: Continuum Architecture.

Our firm has always had the partners' names or initials in the masthead, but this time, we want a name we won't have to change again.

We'd like to recognize the retirement of our long-time senior partner John Pettigrew. We'll keep John close by as a special consultant and advisor. Brian Lord and I remain as the firms' Senior Partners. I'd also like to officially announce and welcome our two new partners - Wil Wiens and Jeremy Beintema. We've been working with Jeremy and Wil for some time now and we know how talented they are.

Continuum speaks to our strong legacy, but with a focus on what's ahead. We at Continuum have great confidence in our future and are looking forward with anticipation to the next 110 years.

We continue to be located in downtown Victoria's historic Market Square, surrounded by buildings that are as old as the company. Our phone number stays the same, but our web and email addresses have been updated. Our new details are all online, at www.continuumarchitecture.ca, and our new email format can be found in my signature below.

Citified.ca posted topic The future of Fort Street's Antique Row retail make-up | Have your say

lpoutine,

Citified.ca has just posted a new topic entitled "The future of Fort Street's Antique Row retail make-up | Have your say" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fort Street's Antique Row is undergoing significant change as new projects reinvigorate this once popular commercial strip in downtown Victoria. Fort Common, which has spearheaded the rejuvenation of the area's retail landscape, was the first step in turning Fort Street into a thriving and inviting place for local businesses to operate. Now the next phases are coming to fruition, and the public has a chance to weigh in on what an ideal mix of retailers should be.

There are multiple ways to provide your feedback. You can do so directly in this thread, or via Citified's Facebook page here, VibrantVictoria's Facebook page here, or by privately emailing your thoughts to admin@thesalientgroup.com.

AllseeingEye posted topic Azteca Tacos and Grill 788 Yates St

lpoutine,

AllseeingEye has just posted a new topic entitled "Azteca Tacos and Grill 788 Yates St" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Our team does a bi-monthly work lunch and today we happened to choose this place literally on the corner of Yates and Blanshard: the bottom line is if you like Mexican this joint gets two thumbs way up. Its awesome grub. Its not a physically large space - the ten of us easily took up a third of it - but it more than makes up for lack of elbow room with outstanding food at reasonable prices and large portions.

I had an Aztecan Soup and carne asada (grilled beef) burrito and had to have half the burrito boxed up to be eaten at dinner.

The burrito's, the Parrillada Azteca and Flauta's (rolled tortillas with your choice of meat and other topping goodies) were all big hits with our group. They also offer a breakfast burrito, a kids menu, they do vegan and participate on Skip the Dishes, so there are plenty of options and lots to like about this new place. They don't yet have a website but here is a link to a bunch of Google reviews on the right hand side of the following page:

https://www.google.com/search?q=azteca+tacos+and+grill&rlz=1C1AWFA_enCA839CA839&oq=Azteca+&aqs=chrome.4.69i57j0l7.8612j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8 (https://www.google.com/search?q=azteca+tacos+and+grill&rlz=1C1AWFA_enCA839CA839&oq=Azteca+&aqs=chrome.4.69i57j0l7.8612j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8)

Go to the See Outside link, grab the screen with your cursor and pan right: this place occupies that tiny location between Brickyard Pizza and the Carnegie Building so you can see its not large. Its the old "Efes" space.
