John M. posted topic Vancouver Municipal Election 2018

lpoutine,

John M. has just posted a new topic entitled "Vancouver Municipal Election 2018" in forum "Victoria Politics".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Moderators please remove this if it is off topic (I vaguely remember us having a similar thread in 2014)
NPA parks commissioner John Coupar had announced (with the support of veteran NPA councillor George Affleck and former Attorney General Suzanne Anton) that he will contest the NPA mayoral nomination. His main opponent it seems will be one-term NP councillor (and former EA for Rich Coleman) Hector Bremmner

Bob Fugger posted topic Gozen | Victoria | Langley at Broughton |

lpoutine,

Bob Fugger has just posted a new topic entitled "Gozen | Victoria | Langley at Broughton |" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, it's been ages since I've started a new thread! So a colleague and I went to Gozen on Friday for lunch. I had popped in previously and looked at a lunch menu. I was disappointed to see the price point for a bento at $15-17. As a point of reference, Koto just a block over offers a decent amount of food of above average quality for $10.50 But we still wanted to give it a shot, as we work nearby.

So as much as we won't be coming here once per week like we do Koto, you can tell the difference in the price. The quality and presentation were far above what you'd get elsewhere. I would even suggest that they would give ebizo, Victoria's apparent gold standard of sushi, a run for their money. The fish was fresh and the presentation was crisp. It reminds me a lot of THE NEXT Japanese fusion in Cook Street Village (who are sadly closing at the end of the month, due to owner illness and no buyer).

Where they excel over even ebizo is the friendliness of their staff (we got a loud MOSHI MOSHI from the sushi bar chefs on the other side of the restaurant, a la Norm from Cheers) and the atmosphere of the room. They did very little to change what they got from North 48, aside from some Japanese flourishes. Incidentally, I hear that they purchased all of the fixtures and tenant improvements for about $50k. They will need that leg up given what I assume the rent is.

Their biggest challenge will be pulling tourists down from Government Street. I have faith that they should be able to do this on reputation alone.

VicHockeyFan posted topic Community rallies to try to save Pages Used Book in Brentwood Bay

lpoutine,

VicHockeyFan has just posted a new topic entitled "Community rallies to try to save Pages Used Book in Brentwood Bay" in forum "Retail Establishments & Grocery Markets".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is quite a nice write-up on a GoFundMe campaign...

------------ QUOTE ----------
The owner is heartbroken. This quaint little book shop (http://www.victoriassecretgems.ca/pages-used-books/) has been a part of the Brentwood Bay community for over 30 years, and without significant support, Pages Used Books will be shut down permanently. Little independently-run shops like this are what make villages a magical place, and losing this book store would leave a hole in the fabric of our community. Book stores are still releavant, and with people realizing the perils of increased screen time, the pendulum is swinging back.

This fundraiser is first and foremost about helping the owner, Max, who has fallen on hard times after giving everything to try to save his beloved shop, including his life savings. Once money is raised to help the owner get back on his feet, further donations will be used to help get Pages back up and running. This includes funds for the first few months of rent, as well as buying inventory back (he is currently locked out of the shop). A local businessman has also donated his time to create an online advertising campaign to help Pages increase its customer base and help make it more viable.

lpoutine,

Kilo95 has just posted a new topic entitled "Island Poke | Victoria | 1674 Douglas" in forum "Restaurant & Eatery Reviews".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Island Poke on Douglas had their soft open today. Located on Douglas between Pandora and Fisgard. Surprised that there aren't any other Poke places in Victoria given their popularity in Vancouver. I stopped by this afternoon and got one of their special bowls from the menu. Fresh ingredients, good price, and way better than the ones they sell at Thrifty's. Hope they can stay open.

amor de cosmos posted topic The Gorge

lpoutine,

amor de cosmos has just posted a new topic entitled "The Gorge" in forum "Urban Issues".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I didn't know about any of these

------------ QUOTE ----------
A Victoria community group says public access to a popular local waterway is being blocked by homeowners and private landowners.

A survey by the Veins of Life Watershed Society and the University of Victoria's Environmental Law Centre identified about 87 public access points to the Gorge waterway that have been blocked, encroached upon or obscured from view.

Calvin Sandborn, the legal director for the law centre, said in some cases "private" and "keep out" signs have been posted on public land near the Gorge, a tidal inlet that extends seven kilometres through the municipalities of Victoria, Saanich and Esquimalt.

"The problems that we're seeing is that public land going down to the water is often being privatized by adjacent landowners," Sandborn said.

Subdivisions in the region require public access to the waterfront every 200 metres, as well as at the ends of roads close to the water, he said.

Sporting a new name, Kensington Union Bay Properties unveiled its long-awaited development plans for Union Bay at the Kingfisher Spa and Resort on March 1. The initiative — Union Bay Estates — is an 850-acre real estate and commercial development project proposed for the Union Bay area. "The project itself is going to be a game-changer for the community," said Kensington vice-president Brian McMahon, who added the initiative is the largest development plan on Vancouver Island north of Victoria. "It's going to be a game-changer for the Comox Valley as a whole." The project, which has already been in the works for many years, promises 2,949 residential units featuring multi and single-family residences, as well as both retirement and affordable housing units. When ultimately completed, the multi-phase development could bring the population of Union Bay to between 7,500 and 9,000. Roughly 1,200 people live there currently.
