----------------------------------------------------------------------
http://www.westerlynews.ca/news/416443343.html
------------ QUOTE ----------
Tofino has a massive housing problem, but that doesn't mean it's ready to rush into a massive housing project without thoroughly kicking the tires first.
Woodsmere Holdings Corp owns a roughly 27-acre lot at 825 Campbell Street and is proposing a 374-unit residential development that would include a variety of dwellings and accommodate roughly 823 individuals.
The housing breakdown is expected to be 200 apartments, split between four buildings, 116 townhouses, two fourplexes, 17 duplexes and 16 single-family homes.
Based on 2016's census results, the project equates to a roughly 36 per cent increase in dwellings and could house nearly half, 43 per cent, of Tofino's population of 1,932 locals.

akimbo posted topic Overheard Asian Buyer Speaking to Realtor at Open House
lpoutine,
akimbo has just posted a new topic entitled "Overheard Asian Buyer Speaking to Realtor at Open House" in forum "Urban Design".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Very crowed open house today in the 1000 block Bank Street. While we were looking, I overheard an Asian buyer who had cornered the realtor. I couldn't quite make out what the prospective buyer was saying, but the realtor was saying, "Um, that's not really legal here . . . No you can't really do that." Ten minutes after I'd gone through the house, the buyer continued to pressure the realtor, until the realtor said something like, "Well, I'd have to talk to the owner, but we don't really do that here. . . it's not really legal... "
Perhaps it may have been a cash offer, probably one that doesn't pass thru the banks. Hang on to your hats folks it's the Vancouverization of Victoria, where money talks and all else goes out the window. I'm sad to see it, because it's why I left the mainland. As the steamroller begins, there is resistance from some principled, honest sellers and realtors, then all-out greed breaks out and nothing but money talks. Then follows the rapid flipping of homes, the emptying out of neighbourhoods, and the bulldozing of houses. . . Minor fines are no deterrent to wealthy Asians. We need the foreign buyer tax NOW in Victoria. It's all well and good to be open minded, and generously spirited, but after a while you may find yourself the last (tax-paying) person left standing on your block.

Benn posted topic Saanich EDPA
lpoutine,
Benn has just posted a new topic entitled "Saanich EDPA" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Environmental Development Permit Area (EDPA) bylaw in Saanich has had substantial media coverage over the past year regarding a series of perceived injustices. The bylaw was intended to preserve, protect and restore native ecosystems during the development permit application process. A review has been going on since 2015, and in 2016 Saanich developed a process for removal applications to be heard. Unfortunately, none of the properties which have been put forward to the municipality for removal have had active development permit applications. On March 6, a motion was passed to 'temporarily' suspend the bylaw pending the review of the bylaw being completed. The suspension would have a serious impact to environmental policy in Saanich, as described in the attached article.
https://medium.com/@benkerr/environmental-protection-in-saanich-a-critical-review-d86dd678871#.u10fyx8d8 (https://medium.com/@benkerr/environmental-protection-in-saanich-a-critical-review-d86dd678871#.u10fyx8d8)
The removal decisions from Saanich council have centered around a dangerous assertion - that environmental values must be confirmed on the ground before government can identify them as worthy of protection.

VicHockeyFan has just posted a new topic entitled "Property owner publicly slams Saanich" in forum "Urban Issues".
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The owners of longstanding Saanich company Islands West Produce have taken a cheeky shot at city hall.
After a five-year process to develop the family property, brothers Ian and Wayne Fatt made the decision to erect a sign on 4227 Dieppe Rd. that says, among other things, to develop in Langford instead of Saanich.
"We made the sign because we're pissed off," Ian Fatt said. "No [builder or developer] wants to open their mouth to criticize Saanich because they have to continue to work with people [at municipal hall] to get a permit."

Subway - Blanshard & Fort
We were looking for a quick, inexpensive lunch yesterday, just after 1pm.
We both got the $5.50 lunch special to eat in.
Found a table, it was very dirty with sticky pop, olives, lettuce etc, the chairs were a bit dirty too. I asked the cashier if I could have a cloth to clean the table; he gave me a few paper napkins.
Wow! So a polite message to the management there; if a customer indicates a table needs cleaning, please have an employee come and wipe the table. There were at least 4 staff members there, and the shop was not busy.
The subs were very good, but a bit more initiative or training may be in order.
